How much does the Carnegie Mellon Pre-college program help in admissions?

How much does this boost my chance of admission if I want to apply early decision to the Mellon college of sicence as well as attend this program this summer. My sibling goes to CMU as well. I am an average student, on par with the others who apply (4.1-2ish gpa) (2300 SAT), no major EC’s or anything.

My son did Pre-College (AP/EA) this past summer between his Sophmore and Junior year. He took 15-122, Principles of Imperative Computation, and 21-127, Concepts of Mathematics. He enjoyed the academic challenge, but he did share that the workload was immense. He ended up with an A in both classes, but a lot of his classmates struggled to get just a C. Since he is only a Junior this year, I can’t speak to the boost in admissions, but I would guess that good grades will be looked upon favorably. My recommendation is that you do Pre-College If you find that the content of the program/classes are compelling rather than just for the potential boost in admissions.

Yes. This.

I’m going to guess it doesn’t help much beyond what other ECs could do for you. I also can’t find any mention of financial aid for this, which would further indicate that getting into/attending the program is far less of an accomplishment than getting into CMU as an undergraduate and the school knows that there will be plenty of kids who will be shut out of the program simply because of finances. I don’t have any connection so I could be totally wrong, but I know that the Brown equivalent of this definitely doesn’t confer any boost.

Just another EC.
