How much does the HS I go to matter?

Yeah just wondering, how much does the HS I go to matter?

My high school is really competitive and has grade deflation, so there’s a big discrepancy between my GPA and test scores. My HS profile might do me a favor by showing how competitive the school is. However, I see a ton of kids with 1800s in because of really high GPAs (GPA/SAT combos like that scream grade inflation), so that kind of makes me think that UCLA only cares about the raw numbers and doesn’t care about grade inflation or deflation that might go on in schools. Anyone want to clear this up for me? Thanks

as long as you beat your classmates, raw scores-wise, they will pick you.

I know someone who went to an insanely competitive high school (to the point where everyone who went there unanimously agrees that their high school was harder than college) and she had even gotten some Ds but still got into UCLA.

^I think that’s the exception. I know plenty of people who went from Troy to Cal state Fullerton.

Like dragnslays said, it’s how good you are compared to your classmates. (Of course if you are in the upper echelon of applicants 2200+ 4.3 etc you’ll get in) The SAT is the great equalizer as well.

^The problem is, there are a bunch of Ivy hopefuls from my school who are applying to UCLA too. They have like 4.3s and 2350s and I don’t think I can compete with them statwise. My ECs and essays are probably better but UGHH my 4.0 and 2250 looks like crap when compared to a 4.3 and 2350 T_T

Does UCLA have a habit of rejecting people who are overly qualified and will not likely attend if accepted? That may be my only hope

No one’s overly qualified for UCLA. No, they definitely don’t reject kids for that reason.

That’s why I qualified my post as of course if you are in the top applicants applying to UCLA itself, you’ll get in. If you think about it, it doesn’t make sense to reject excellent applicants. Schools actually over admit the # of students because not everyone who is accepted commits to going.

To answer your last question on your first post, the UC’s have profiles of every high school to gauge GPA averages/SAT’s etc. Undoubtedly they will notice certain schools are more competitive/deflated, but to be honest, I suspect that they would take a 4.3 2200 at an easy school compared to a 4.0 2200 at a difficult school. I stand by my statement though that they like students who are at the top of their hs.

With that said, you have a low weighted GPA (avg 2011 admitted was 4.34, enrolled 4.25 which is insane), but your SAT is excellent. Depending on your UW, you have a shot since your SAT makes up for the GPA.

Good luck
