Is the interview really considered that much? How much will it help in admissions?

I got in without an interview, but then again, maybe I’m just that amazing

UPDATE: An alumni just called my house literally like 5 minutes ago and set up an interview for Monday.

Ummm… wow. I have no idea what it will be like. Can anybody give me info on how the interviews go? What type of questions do they ask? I feel like I’m going to make myself look ridiculous.

My interviewer is from MD too, in case any other MD CCers possibly had the same guy.

anybody???

i’m from maryland. i had an interview that went terribly; it was only about ten minutes long. the only question my interviewer asked me was “describe yourself. what do you do?”

I got in early decision.

I was accepted ED into CAS. My alumni interview was very informal. (Heck, even the interviewer was wearing jeans and a t-shirt!) He basically wanted to know what my interests were and why I wanted to go to Penn. I brought a resume with me, but he didn’t even want to see it. Beyond that, it was my chance to ask him questions about Penn. Just relax, be yourself, and you’ll be fine.

i dont think the interview will hurt
i mean i got in and didnt have one but either way i think its just to get to know you if they ahad some ? about your app.

how bad will it look if i decline the interview?

the alumni office said that interviews aren’t really a factor in the decision making process. they’re really just so you can learn more about the school so if you arent offered one it wont hurt your application at all. that said, declining an interview may raise some questions so unless you have a very good reason for doing so, the interview really can’t hurt your application.

well, if it can’t really hurt me, i’d rather just go and get it over with. i don’t care if it lasts 5 minutes.

any more tips on what i might be asked?

this is what i’ve heard:
it can’t help you that much, but it can hurt you.
but i heard this from the only guy i know who’s gotten an interview. he was rejected.
i didn’t get an interview although i could’ve requested one because i was scared that it would hurt me. i got in without it, so it probably doesn’t make a big difference.

Unless you are a total arrogant jackass during your interview, it probably won’t hurt you. However, help?? That’s more debatable.

I had my interview over the weekend, and it was really relaxed. Don’t worry. My interviewer introduced herself and a brief overview of her life story, and asked me about mine. Then, we continued our conversation about our likes/dislikes, shared some funny stories, and she asked me to explain some of my achievements and awards.
Of course, there was the “why penn?” question, but since you’re applying and already answered the ‘why penn’ essay, you should be fine. She did throw a few curveball questions at me: something along the lines of “what inspires you?” and “what will you be remembered by at your school?” But don’t be afraid to contemplate about your answer for a few seconds, and then answer genuinely, instead of blurting out an incoherent answer.

Good Luck!

thanks for the advice. yeah, i did a lot of research on Penn so i think i can answer those questions coherently.

what are some good questions to ask the interviewer?
