My parents both attended art school. My mom got a bachelor’s and associate’s degree, and my dad got a bachelor’s and master’s. I know that there are advantages for first-generation college students, but if my parents both attended art school does this impact me in any way?
I think you have it backwards. There are massive disadvantages for first-generation college students. They struggle with understanding how the system works, they don’t have the same group of “family friends” who can serve as professional mentors and advice-givers, and they often suffer from a sense of not belonging in college culture. Just today I had a student talking about how her parents were not only not big readers, but are illiterate. She was saying how that meant she didn’t have anyone to help her understand assignments growing up, and how it meant she struggled throughout school. (Of course, this was an extreme case, but it gives you a sense of the real struggles some college students face.) So coming from an educated family is a great boon to you, and has no doubt had a profound impact on the opportunities that are fairly easily accessible to you. The fact that your parents have an arts background probably adds another layer of privilege, in that they were able to expose you to a wide variety of topics and cultures. Be grateful for that lucky birthright.
