How much impact do interviews have?

Hi! I just had a pretty bad interview at Deerfield that was really short, so I was curious how much of an impact interviews can have on the overall admissions process. Thanks!

Was it online or in-person? In both scenarios, though it may seem like an interview went badly it just could be for you and it is possible the AO thought otherwise. Other than that, interviews have a significant impact on the application process but you application will still be viewed holistically. Nothing you can change now, just make sure you essays and ecs are great!

Well length doesn’t really matter, for example I had a hour+ interview last year but I still ended up only getting a W/L from that school. PLUS what you think the interview went isn’t always the case with the AO. But otherwise interviews are a huge part of your application, it is IMO the 3rd most important part of your application, you can’t change anything now so don’t dwell on it.

Good luck!

Unless someone is in the admissions office, no one knows the exact weight given to interviews. I do know that feeling like the interview went really well does not mean one will be admitted.

Based on what you posted on the other Deerfield thread, I would say not to worry. Like another poster said into response to your post on that thread, they’ve likely already made up their mind in a positive way. Regardless, make sure your app is standing tall with strong essays. Interviews are a small part and are as much for your benefit as the school’s. Good luck.

Interviews are important in assessing your ability to conduct yourself independently and within the community. There are kids who are simply not ready, or perhaps not in the mindset, to thrive at BS. Because schools are different, what they are looking for may differ as well. It’s hard to believe when you’re an applicant, but AOs are quite committed to admitting students who will succeed.

In that regard, they are important. But it is one part of the application. A great interview won’t make up for an academic record suggesting you’ll struggle. And what you consider a bad interview may not be bad at all. There’s no point fretting over it at this point.
