how much influence does a music teacher have?

I am going to be a senior and I am currently deciding between two schools, upenn and brown, to apply early to.

according to past statistics, i have a better chance of getting in at penn (higher gpa/satscores than the avg accepted there) than at brown (lower in both categories).

However, my cello teacher is on the Brown faculty, and said that he would write a recommendation for me and also talk to the music director at brown.

i’ve heard horror stories from classmates of mine, putting all their eggs in one basket, only to hear later that their coach/teacher actually didn’t have much real influence or power over their chances of acceptance.

thoughts?

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Why not apply to both? No need to put your eggs in one basket. I’m not sure whether the ivy’s share their applications, but I doubt they give a crap. One recommendation to brown and one recommendation to upenn would be great.

Now I only say that if music is your major. It seems like it, but I’ve come across weirdos. If it’s pre-med or something along the likes of that, RAWFUL! Good luck.
