How much inter-school interaction is there?

My biggest drawback for Harvey Mudd is the male/female split. Friends I have in colleges where the split is severely against them say they really don’t enjoy it, and the split is the reason I never even considered schools like Caltech and MIT (even assuming I could get in).

Are there any current students that could tell me how much interaction there is with other schools? Obviously in classes at Harvey Mudd the ratio is going to be obvious, but how about outside of class?

The small number of majors is another drawback for me, because although I’m planning on going into physics, I’m still unsure as to whether I want to commit to that. But that’s another issue that I probably have to figure out myself.

at mudd, the classes are obviously majority male. this does not mean, however, that there are no girls around mudd for the social scene. scripps college (all girls school) is just across the street… i could walk there in 20 seconds from my room. in addition, you have the girls from pomona, cmc, and pitzer all to help level it out.

i can preach all day how necessary it is to receive a broad-based education for your undergraduate experience… especially when going into the technical fields. you have plenty of time to specialize later on, but now is the time to get a really great firm base.

i would be lying to you if i said that your anxiety regarding the ratio and the majors will go away… if it really is that big of a deal. i, for one, like girls and i have met a lot of nice young women during my first year at mudd. although none of the (thus far) has amounted to a steady relationship, at least there have been flings.

There’s not a LOT of interaction between the schools, but it does happen. My freshman year I hardly knew anyone from off campus. This last year I met a bunch of really cool scrippsies. Scripps girls tend to spend more time at Mudd than people from any other campus, I think mainly just because they’re closer than anyone else. I’m working on getting to know people from other campuses. Quite frankly, though, I don’t really notice the ratio that much. I mean, I’ve had classes where I was one of two girls and there were like 20 of us total, but it really didn’t bother me too much. If you’re concerned about the ratio, you’ll notice it more. And if you’re determined to meet people from off campus, you can pretty easily make it happen. I don’t think those should be the deciding factors in whether or not you choose this school, but if it’s really that important to you than I would suggest you visit and just see how all of that feels to you.
