how much is merit aid usually?

Hmm. This blows. So I’m basically getting no money whatsoever from Michigan if I’m not a US citizen or permanent resident? (Although I do reside in California?)

That’s correct tako. Michigan gives a $20,000+ scholarship to 16,000 (65%) of their undergrads. They are called in-state students. It cannot afford givign too many more scholatrships to other students.

State of Michigan Aid to U of M = $364MM

“Scholarship” to In-State Students = 16,000 X $20,000 = $320MM

but logically speaking, the state of michigan is under obligation to aid only in-state students.

That’s correct, and the difference between in-state and out-of state tution is builit in to reflect that obligation. Merit scholarships are funded primarily with endowed money from outside sources. Other than stipulations by the donors themselves, I couldn’t tell you why those are not available to foreign students.

tetrahedr0n

The official COA, OOS Fr/So:
Tuition & Fees
$31,302
Room & Board
$8,190
Books & Supplies
$1,020
Personal & Miscellaneous
$2,000
Total Budget
$42,512

So unless you are getting back more than $3,020, you are still under the official COA.

That’s for a OOS student. As an IS student last year, I received quite a bit over that figure you listed there. Closer to double in fact. I could go do the calculation, but I feel like it’s over the COA.

I can’t quite engage with the discussion here since i’m not only OOS, but out-of-country. But things sure look dismal lol.
