as above. what’s the highest anyone ever gotten. what did you get? care to share? a brief summary of the situation and your stats will be most useful.

I got 20k a year OOS in LSA. my quick stats:
HS GPA: 4.0
SAT: 2290/1530
ACT: 34
APs: took 17 APs
National Merit Finalist
600 hours volunteer
great ECs

Probably about 50k a year. Though in very very rare circumstances.

The highest anyone has every gotten is the highest you can get - a full ride.

Look up the Shipman Scholarship in LS&A.

pretty impressive, maguo1.

hm. i bet full rides are extremely rare. i’m looking at UM for engineering. anyone knows anything about merit aid for engin. applicants?

also, if anyone is interested, my stats are here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=392544
perhaps you can tell me if i’m competitive for merit aid.

I would say that do have shot a decent shot at merit aid.

i don’t think they hand many scholarships to international kids. not sure though.

It’s possible to get more. They give you the scholarships in dollar amounts and you’re reimbursed for what goes over.

The engineering honor scholarship (or something like that, I don’t remember the official name) is the equivalent of the one maguo is getting in LSA. So like 20k a year. There’s a few folks getting it.

I agree that you could get more, but it would be marginally more and based on your specific living conditions etc. For instance, the Shipman award is 36, 800 for out-of-state. Out of state tuition is $31, 302, so if you can live outside of the dorm for less than $5,490 then you can pocket the difference.

SBDad, thanks for all the info. Glad to hear your son loves Michigan. I try to remind my son that that in-staters have a built-in $12,000 “scholarship” because they pay in-state tuition. Add the NMSF and the Michigan Promise money, it is looking pretty good. If he is blessed enough to be nominated for the Byrd scholarship, - it would be an awesome package.

tetra,
You can only get UMich scholarships up to COA, if you go over (happens rarely), they will take back some of the awards. However, if you go over COA with outside scholarships, then they will give you that money in a check.

SBDad,
I thought that the R&B part of the Shipman only applied if you are living on campus?

OP,
You might try getting ahold of oldolddad, I believe his son got several scholarships through the Engineering Dept, including the Shipman.

I disagree. I am a Shipman scholar (actually in Engineering too.) I definitely get back money from internal scholarships, and so do most of the folks in my scholarship society.

And that is correct. The R&B portion goes away if you don’t choose to live on campus.

Thanks for the correction.

tetra,
My D got the MSA early on and then got the LSA Shipman. They took away the MSA as it would have gone substantially over the COA. It sounds like Engineering is doing things differently than LSA. Just want to make it clear to students reading this that there doesn’t appear to be a university wide policy.

actually i don’t really need anything beyond what i need. i think what i can earn from a quality education goes beyond what i can get in merit money over four years, but rather it is in character development and future earnings. i don’t intend to make money out of college, but i just need to be able to afford to attend.

btw thanks to all! anymore can share how much you got? and maybe summarize stats. Is it very hard to get something in the range of $20k?

very, very hard.

3.9+ GPA and 33+ ACT or 2200+ SAT i’d say.

Warden, unfortunately, Michigan does not grant Scholarships (merit or need based) to international students.

oh. thats bad news

Alexandre could you tell me more about how differently internationals are treated when it comes to aid? im thinking you shld be well-informed about this since you’re international too, apparently.

I am indeed international. International students at the University of Michigan are treated like any other student. The only difference is, they cannot get any financial aid from the University. There are scholarships availlable from other sources perhaps, and those, you must explore on your own.

Perhaps you can seek our GoBlue81. He really knows his stuff and if I am not mistaken, he is quite knowledgeable about your part of the World.
