How much is missing too much school?

Yeah, I agree. It’s definitely easier to make up 4-5 days spread out over a semester than it is to make up a week straight.

My parents are doctors, too, but I still get sick and miss, on average, a week or a week and a half per winter. There’s also usually one or two days a year when I just have a really bad day at school and after school and I’m really stressed and haven’t done too much work and I ask my parents to stay home the next day. I’ve always loved going to school, so they always understand if I need one day off and they let me stay home.

Well, I will admit that I am a very healthy person, minus a few permanent but non-serious health issues. But last year, I did get sick (a lot), and my parents’ mantra throughout the whole winter was “If you don’t need to go to the hospital immediately, we don’t care.” I’m still alive, but I think it was irresponsible on their part because (1) I spread nasty germs to everyone (2) I can’t really learn when I’m hacking and sneezing through every class (3) Neither can anyone else. I think the worst thing they did was make me go to school with a horribly bad case of pink eye AND a bad cold. My mom gave me some cough drops (which she made a huge deal about having to go out and buy), an inhaler (what the heck???), and (worst of all) a tube of 10-year old eye antibiotic stuff and sent me on my way.

I really think they should have their licenses revoked :)

^Actually, that’s not really unreasonable. When you have a job, you will get (most likely) next to no sick time. Neither of my parents have any sick time and very little vacation time for their jobs, so they make it a point that you show up unless you’re dying. You already get 2.5 months off every summer, plus two weeks for Christmas, a week during the spring, and several other miscellaneous holidays and school-specific service days. That’s way more time than working people get off, so there’s really no excuse to miss school for silly things like the SAT. Though high school does not equal the working world, it’s a good idea to establish your work ethic early.

Yea but you get paid for work. As long as you keep your GPA up (I missed like 15 days last year and was valedictorian) it really doesn’t matter.

My parents always just let me decide whether or not I’m going to school. I have to tell them if I’m staying home, but they figure since I love school and I know what’s going on in class I know whether or not I can afford to miss.

Most of the time when I miss it’s for my mental health rather than my physical health.

I hate make up work so I usually just go.
