So I got a letter from a coach at HMC, which said this:

“Even though the number of applications this year is at an all-time high… I feel very confident that you’re going to make the cut.”

Does this mean anything, considering that it’s only coming from a coach at the school? (I did tell him if I went I would play that sport) Should it mean anything at all? The letter is making me slightly neurotic, because HMC is my top school.

Staff can say what they like but it’s probably very unusual for anyone at any college to make such a statement unless they’ve seen your acceptance and have tacit approval from admissions to make the broad “hint” to you. i.e. you’re almost certainly in.

I’m not exactly sure how HMC does it, but I think most comparable schools have the coaches send the admissions office their wish lists with names of prospective student athletes. So chances are the coach hasn’t actually spoken with the AdCom about your application, but it’s definitely a plus factor.

Then again “I feel very confident that you’re going to make the cut” is rather strong wording… so perhaps pjpj is right and the coach has spoken to the AdCom. There are quite a few stories of applicants not getting in to their top schools despite receiving similar letters though.

It’s difficult to say really. I didn’t apply to HMC this year, but one of my best friends did, and I stumbled across your post browsing this portion of the site. I’m a bit in the same boat as you because coaches at both Bowdoin and Carleton have said things to me like “I feel like you’re a perfect fit and have great potential in our program,” “I hope you choose to come here next year,” and “I’ll be sure to put in a good word for you at Admissions.” Yet, even with all of this I can’t help but feel like I’m going to get rejected. Take my post with a grain of salt though: I’m fresh off of waitlists at both WASHU and UCHICAGO, so I’m a bit bitter about things right now. However, that letter seems like it means really good things for you. Best of luck!!!

phoenix17: I actually got a letter from UChicago’s coach that was like “I’ll put in a good word for you” or something to that effect. It might be just personal bias working, (want to go to HMC faaaar more than UChicago) but this sounds a lot more explicit. Eh, whatever. We shall see, April 1st.

At most schools I’d predict an 80% chance for you, but I don’t think Mudd recruits anyone for sports. Actually, I don’t think that Mudd has any competitive teams of its own. The consortium as a whole has a few teams, but I don’t know why Mudd would recruit for a team that it doesn’t even manage.

apathy: My friend is getting recruited by HMC for tennis and the tennis coach told him the same thing (by phone rather than snail mail/email). Whereas, if I get in, I’ll be playing basketball there; only, I haven’t heard a word from their basketball coach. I’ve emailed him a bunch and sent him a DVD/other materials/etc, but he hasn’t responded to anything. : ( Good luck though! It sounds like you’ve got it made!

On a side note, my school’s trainer said that he’s had more people go to Mudd for track than any other sport. Maybe I should have done track instead? :-P

i don’t know if this is still relevant, but two of my friends got into pomona, one for tennis and one for softball. the softball coach said that only 2 of 9 of her supposed recruits got in, and the tennis coach said only 3 of 20 tennis recruits got in.
