My daughter got into Syracuse, Umass Amherst, URI, UNH, and Manhattan College.
Top choice is Syracuse, then UMASS.
UMASS and ManHattan gave the same amount of $$ and covered all but 5k.
Syracuse is her absolute top choice but we would most likely have to borough about 20k per year.
What to do??? Should i try and get Syracuse to give her as much as the others? What are the chances of that happening? We have no money so this would all be debt and she would have that burden. I am a single mom, (currently under employed) and no one else can help pay.
How much debt is reasonable for a kid who would have to pay it back herself?
and I want to know does the financial aid amount change every year? will the price go up?
HELP!
We want to try and make Syracuse work, any advice or should I get her to go to UMASS?
Thanks!
Congrats on admissions to Syracuse, Umass Amherst, URI, UNH, and Manhattan College!
You might try negotiating with Syracuse fin aid to try to improve or match the fin aid package of one of the other universities. Otherwise, in my opinion, borrowing $20k/year (that would be $80k by the time she graduates) is TOO much a burden for any young person.
Does the fin aid package change every year ? You need to ask the university. For some, you need to reapply every year and they evaluate your financial need every year. You need to contact Syracuse financial aid and ask.
Hopefully your D has a financial safety amongst those universities she was admitted to - one that is affordable, least amount of loans to pay back at the end of 4 years, best financial package. Give it some serious thought.
You might also ask your question on the Parent’s Forum or Financial Aid (lots of talk on that forums about college costs) for more suggestions.
