How much like a real job should an internship be?

My daughter is going to possibly be offered a position as a summer intern, but it seems like they only want her for 3 hours a week. She is reluctant to commit because if she does get offered another internship that is more like 40 hours a week, she would prefer that, as it will be more like a real job. She thinks it will look bad on her resume.

So what is expected from an internship? Do future employers care about the number of hours an applicant actually works if they hold the position all summer? She feels she needs to respond today, but is worried about then saying no if a better position is offered.

Assuming she’s in college – I would guess it’s going to be more about what she’s able to accomplish in only three hours a week. It won’t be as much as if she worked full-time. If she comes out of the experience with nothing to talk about in interviews for other jobs in the future, I don’t think it would be very useful for her.

Then again, there’s a difference between doing that after freshman year (or in high school) and after junior year. Early on, it might be more helpful.

Yes, @bodangles , I should have said she’s in college. Thanks for your advice, good points.

I would skip a three hour a week internship, you simply couldn’t get anything done. Something else should come along however if she wants to do it she should tell them that 3 hours isn’t enough.
