How much money did you spend on dorm stuff for Freshman year?

I know that I’ve spetn about $110 on stuff, because I had $500 and now I’m down to about $390. :(

I spent about $60 on a bedding set from BBB. Came with a laundry bag, sheets, comforter… a crate… and a calendar.

And I bought some hangers, a whiteboard, a laundry basket, a new alarm clock… Maybe some other stuff. I don’t remember.

I’m planning on getting a loft… and that’s $150 to rent for the year. :(

But I plan on finishing my shopping this weekend during the Tax-Free Weekend. So woo.

I got my bedding from the school. It was a little over $120 and it came with a fitted sheet, flat sheet, comfortable, pillow cases, mattress pad, 8 towels and something else that I know I’m forgetting. After seeing how expensive a lot of mattress pads are, I think I got a good deal just for getting that alone with all the sheets. I still need to get new pillows and a few extra large towels.

(But I forgot to mention that I’m not a freshman, I’m a transfer student. But I am going from a CC to a 4-year school so the shopping thing is still pretty much the same.)

All together, I think it came up to about $300 (including bedding, storage, lamp, rug, and all that little random stuff). It would have been a lot more if I hadn’t gone with primarily DIY/digging through my parents’ old stuff for decor. As it is, I mostly just bought essentials. And a couple of throw pillows.

About $100 give or take a twenty. I am using my brother’s old laundry mesh bag that has a few holes in it and his shower caddy. Other than that I bought bedding, a plate, microwavable bowl, can opener, and school supplies. Iluvpiano’s list is ridiculous…I could never imagine spending that much money for the semester, and $200 on school supplies alone…

I still have to buy just about everything I’ll be getting, and I leave in a little over a week.

I barely went shopping. All I got was shampoo, soap, toothpaste/brush, etc. and school supplies so in total I’ve spent only $65 so far on just that. I still have to get new glasses, a laptop, sheets/towels, storage boxes, clothes, etc. so … If I spent $60 on just those alone, then OHBOY. Burning a hole in my parents’ wallets …

Yeah, you guys better get shopping this week/weekend! I’d think stuff starts to get picked over by now, as it’s getting to the final time to pack and leave. We just finished packing up most of my stuff tonight for what’s going in a small trailer, and then the rest of the stuff will fit fine in the car.

I’ve got my bedding all picked out I just have to go buy it. I’m going to buy toiletries and things when I get down there so I don’t have to worry about hauling it on such a long drive. Other than that I just need a few things for linens, some school supplies, a new backpack, and some storage items. Might buy a couple miscellaneous things here or there. Most of what I get will be in the first few weeks of school though. I’m estimating maybe $200-$400 in expenses.

iluvpiano: You’re taking a trailer to school? Seriously? A piece of advice - if it won’t fit in your car, it probably won’t fit in your room. Unless you have a really big single.

^See I’ve bought about everything except groceries, so that’s kind of why. And yes it will fit. It’s a small trailer by dad built (didn’t make it for this, he built that earlier for something else). We’re not taking a huge vehicle either. You can’t possibly fit everything in a car, unless you plan to buy a lot of stuff when you get there, which is not what I’ve done. Also, I’m a music major, so that means I have more stuff to take than most of you guys- like instruments, and tons of music (and I have a big music locker at school for that). I’ve actually made a detailed “dorm organization plan” of where everything goes. Also, other family members going along in the car have to have some space for their stuff, because they’re staying overnight at a hotel, so they each have a suitcase/duffel bag to pack too.

ummm no… You do not need more stuff then any other major. What you need are nessesities, not wants.

The family suitcases and instruments do make a difference, so I understand that. But the vast majority of new students come in a single car. Even my Freshman roommate who came from Colorado with a crazy amount of stuff managed to fit it all in her four door sedan.

^^Yeah, like I said, I have books & instruments that I HAVE TO TAKE as a music major, so yes, music majors do have a few extra things that non-musicians don’t have! My instruments/books are not ‘wants’, they fall under the necessities category for musicians! I can’t believe you think a music major doesn’t NEED that stuff…then tell me this, without an instrument and books, how am I supposed to practice!!! Anybody could figure that out! I really can’t believe you can’t figure that out!!!

and to ^, thank you.

iluvpiano, I understand about the music stuff too; I bring all of my piano, clarinet, and voice/choral music with me and both of my clarinets. Just out of curiosity, how much music do you have?

Thank you clarinette52 for understanding, UNLIKE icedragon!

I play clarinet also, btw! I’m bringing 2- my new, good one, and one of my old ones as a back-up, in case the good one had to have some work done on it for a while.

Music- a little clarinet music, but not much. Piano music- a lot! I’m not bringing all of it, because I don’t know that I’ll need it. At home, just to give you an idea, I have one bookcase full that’s 15"x12"x48" and another that’s 29"x12"x36", those are full. Then I have a 3rd bookcase of similar size in my bedroom that’s full of old music, which of course isn’t going with me. Most of what’s in those first two has to come with, plus I have some laying in a small basket on the floor and current stuff sitting on the piano, and some more in the piano benches (I have 2 pianos). I also have some other music stuff that has to go with, such as a tuner for clarinet, metronome, voice recorder, bookbag (with a piano on it!), clarinet supplies (reeds, etc.), music dictionary and a few other books like that (have books on Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, & Debussy that I’ve read and might want).

My my my aren’t you in a right mood. No need to be rude.

I was referenceing other things outside of your music pieces (ie: ridiculous amount of clothes and other htings).

That’s a lot! All of my music fits into one wine box.

^^Well the way you said it, you implied that there was NOTHING else needed, even musical things.

^and yes, I know it is! Like I said, not all of it in those shelves is going, but enough of it is. You said you have piano, clarinet, & vocal music…which one is your major (by your username, I’d guess clarinet). Piano is my major instrument, so I have a ton of those really thick books.

Actually, I major in voice. I don’t have time to play clarinet other than pep band. I’m learning piano, and I have some big voice music books and a ton of choral music. I still love playing clarinet, though!

Dorm stuff freshmen year, oh gosh most expensive item purchased was probably bedding. Why? Already had a fairly new mini refrigerator, and roommate was said to have a tv. Now that I will be in an apartment some dorm stuff become useless ( mini refrigerator).
