How much money did you spend on dorm stuff for Freshman year?

I have to bring a ton of things too. My dorm is going to be an apartment that I share with 3 others (think old 5 star hotel renovated and converted to a dorm room)

I bought a new table and chair since they don’t have them there ($150)
I’ve spent about 500 dollars so far and need some more misc things (everything from toilet paper to ziplock bags). I’ve already had my laptop and external monitor.

I will be bringing a foam pad and pillow too. Sadly I think we will have to go on 2 cars since mine is small and wont fit anything else but my table and maybe my clothes.

My parents wont let me keep my car on campus and the nearest store is 3 miles away. The bus takes trips to the store once a week and I have class during that time. So until I make some friends that drive I need to have enough of everything. It sucks bringing a lot of things but I suppose when I get an apartment I won’t have much at all to buy.

Laundry bag: $6
Fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillow case: $20
Mattress pad: $15
Towels: $8

I still need a comforter ($16), laptop/printer/case ($550), shower caddy ($5), and desk lamp ($15).

^^Make sure you look for one with a metal shade. The plastic shade lamps are banned at many schools because they are considered fire hazards.

My mom said I need to buy an iron & ironing board too, so I have to go get that sometime in the next week. Idk how much that costs. I thought I was done dorm shopping! :(

You really don’t need an ironing board…in fact, at my college’s orientation it was on the top of their list of what NOT to bring. At the most get a handheld steamer…I’m serious, put your foot down on this one

Really? Ok, I’ll tell her about that. I’m really not into ironing anyways. Most of my clothes I don’t get them wrinkled enough to need ironing. I don’t even know how to iron…my mom says she’s going to show me that quickly before I go (in 10 days!!!). That’s how rarely that something needs ironing…my mom does it when necessary.

Plus, I already bought that wrinkle releaser spray…why should I have to iron something too if I have that? Mom says I still have to…

Yeah tell your mom to save her money :)

Also agree that you don’t need the iron. It might be a bit of a waste if your school’s washers and dryers are pay per cycle, but you can also always throw something wrinkled in the dryer for 15 to 20 minutes with a damp wash cloth or sock to get rid of wrinkles. Just watch the garment and hang it the moment it comes out of the dryer.

^My school’s laundry is free! So it’s no big deal to throw something in for a little bit!

actually, its probably thrown into the fees somehow. Thats how my school does it ('cept they eleminated some of the telephones in the suits, but still it wouldn’t surprise me).

Also, school washers and dryers can hold a lot. I normally get away with one white load and one color load.

Oh, I’m sure it is. I just said ‘free’ as in no extra charge, like I don’t need quarters to do laundry.

You don’t need an ironing board to iron. You can iron over a folded bed sheet or towel.

Some colleges also have an iron in the laundry room. And yes, throwing something in the dryer for even 5-10 minutes will get the wrinkles out

^^Uh, yeah I guess you probably could. Not sure my mom would be ok w/ that though. She’ll insist on the ironing board.

and ^, yeah I guess I haven’t checked that. Honestly, if I end up actually using an iron (rather than the wrinkle releaser spray or the dryer method) like a couple times a semester is probably all.

Your mom really wouldn’t be okay with that? I’ve always ironed my clothes on a towel over my bed.

Yeah, you haven’t met my mom…that’s just how she is. She’d think it’s not ‘safe’ or something.

After sleeping in the dorm bed at orientation, we are totally loading up on cushy things for the bed…you aren’t allowed to switch out the mattress, and they are like rocks!

I use a lap desk to iron.

Since I already had twin bedding for college, and I just took a lot of stuff I had from home, I really don’t think I spent more than $50 or so.

I wouldn’t spend too much money on bedding/mattress pad because most students like to move out the moment they’re eligible to live off campus, and by then you’re probably going to want a bigger sized bed. If you’re getting twin bedding for the first time just get something cheap at Walmart.

^I just bought cheap enough twin bedding at Target. I have full size at home.
