How much scholarship $ would sway you to pick a safety over your dream school?

Since some scholarships are applicable for in-state schools only and there are yet more scholarships given by the school (to be used only at the school), what difference in cost would make the difference for you?

$25,000 or more.

Wouldn’t it depend heavily on family circumstances?

Priceless.

Good question…

For my kids it was knowing that they could use their college money for professional school, so they’d have less debt for that.

30k did, but 10k would have. I’m broke.

None. I want to go to my dream school.

^ Ditto. It’s my dream school and I’ve been knee deep in private scholarships that I hope to get.

Dreaming is great when your means allow for it. Full tuition is pretty hard to pass up.

Depends who’s paying otherwise. I wouldn’t go into debt one penny if I didn’t have to.

I didn’t have a dream school so whoever gave me the most money I’d go there.

^^

Some kids won’t consider a scholarship because they want to go to a dream school…but then they get to the dream school and hate it (or they end up in deep debt to go there).

That happened to one of my friends actually. She went to what she thought was her dream school, hated it and ended up dropping out and just going to the CC here this semester. Then again she got full aid from fafsa so it’s not really the same concept but you get the gist.

Well for many kids on here, it isn’t there money so they can’t really answer the question. Those that would take the dream school no matter what: how many are planning to pay back their parents the full amount of cost, which for many families can easily exceed $200,000? I’m not even sure a lot of kids in highschool can even comprehend how much money that is (especially with compound interest on loans which would make it way higher than $200,000).

My college fall 2010 on is basically going to be paid in loans so I’m going to have a fun time after school is over…

^^^

Oh my goodness! How much will you be borrowing? Do you have co-signers?

how much do you expect to be earning once you graduate?

Well everything in total my school is going to be about $20k a year so…I guess roughly $60k? I’m assuming my parents are going to cosign with me, at least that’s what my mom told me. I honestly have no idea how much I’ll be earning but I was actually planning to go straight to grad school.

Basically my philosophy. Best combo of money and prestige, no matter what.

So, that’s why I’m most likely attending one of the top two public schools in my state (their reps are about equal) Honors Program. It’ll be cheap, prestigious, and I’ll leave with a reputable degree (or degrees) in fields which I can find $70k+/yr jobs walking out the door and also gain an edge in grad school admissions to a Ivy or Big 10 grad school (yes, the Big 10 is WAY selective at the grad level).

It also depends on what your dream school is. I aiming high at HYPS, and if a 1/10000000000 acceptance actually came, I’d pay only 10 grand at the most. Of course it’s different when your dream school doesn’t have such a fantastic financial aid program.

I’d rather go to my dream school.
