I had a similar situation, Tabster-- I needed a single because of a disability and it cost me a FORTUNE. It wasn’t double but it was probably 3-4k more, it was a lot. I had to max out my loans and had no savings left over to get me through the year, it was really bad.

I agree with talking to the financial aid office. Sometimes they have forms you can fill out or letters you can write for special circumstances, and you can describe that you have this additional need and that you would like for them to consider extending your financial aid to cover it-- it might be loans but at least you’d get the room. You’d need your doctors to back you up on this. I had to do something like that myself for a different issue and sometimes they can make exceptions and find a way to make something work.

If the cost of a single on campus is prohibitive, could you maybe get a medical waiver for the on-campus housing requirement and live off campus? That might also work better for your migrane headaches.

My biggest concern is that it may not be possible to get a new room quickly if things don’t work out. At my own college the dorms are filled to capacity at the beginning of the year and nobody can move until a few students drop out or take a leave of absence - which doesn’t usually happen until several weeks into the semester. With the wrong roommate, that could be a very unpleasant wait for both of you.

Well I know at my other school they didn’t put me in a single like I asked, they put me in a double by myself and made me pay the full amount. I WAS able to get it though, even though it was pretty late then too. They just stuck me in the oldest, crappiest dorm that was less than half full. Infuriatingly enough, every single other person in my dorm was living by themselves in a double room, and NOT being charged the full amount. Technically they could only have their stuff on their side, and had to be ready at any time for a roommate, but nobody paid any attention to that.

I’m living out of state and have the regional discount at Murray State University. The requirement is you have to live on campus if you are going to qualify, otherwise I would have to pay the full out of state amount, which is way more than the cost of a single room.

The requests for Disability Housing Accomadations have to be made by June 30th so I still have a bit of time, if I fax it in. The housing exemption doesn’t apply to people with the regional tuition according to the website. . .but it would be worth a shot to ask. . .

But another thing about living off campus. . .don’t have a car, so it would have to be CLOSE.

I would worry about your screaming disturbing people nearby as well . If you were the other roommate ,how would feel ? Maybe if you tell the head of the dorm about this ,they will give you a single because your problem would affect others ,without the added fees.

definitely talk to reslife. it’s insane that they are making you pay more for a single when it is not only medically necessary, but beneficial to you and your future roommate. fax it in RIGHT NOW and call until you can talk to someone who will listen.
