My D moved into her new school today. She replaced only the bare minimum with the hopes that Tulane will come up with a plan to get them their things from the dorm. Her new roommate is also a displaced tulane student and she bought everything new. I hope we aren’t being to optimistic about getting her stuff. What are other students doing?
Also the school she is attending is on the quarter system so it almost seems like she would need to stay the entire yr. to transfer credits.

I had to replace some clothes because S only brought 2 pairs of shorts, 3 shirts, and 5 pairs of underwear when we evacuated, and of course, his beloved laptop.

So, I had no choice but to buy him some new clothes. We also bought some school supplies, a new but very cheap ($6) desk lamp on sale at target, and a few other things. Luckily, I have two friends who have college age kids who lent me bedding, surge protector, some bins, extension cords, etc. It really helped alot. We won’t be replacing his printer, guitars, jackets. He’ll just make do.

I may be riduculously optimistic, but I believe we’ll end up being able to get back in to retrieve stuff within the next 4-6 weeks. Most of the blogs I’ve read seem to indicate that the Tulane section of town is in very good shape, relatively speaking. It’s encouraging to hear of electricity already being on in some areas, per the Entergy spokesperson today.

Look here for close-up overheads of the city: http://ngs.woc.noaa.gov/katrina/KATRINA0000.HTM. That can show you the true extent of the water.

Quick response, as have been away from Internet a few days, and am off to a parent luncheon for Tulane “visitings” at Bates College, where S started yesterday.
We, too, are going the minimalist route. Although S housing is not yet set.

We had to replace TI graphing calculator; will not replace laptop but rather use his older desktop. I’m also optimistic re getting and retrieving some stuff. We’ll see.

I have just been on the Tulane student blog where there is a link to heavily discounted clothing (specifically for Tulane “displaced” students). I haven’t had a chance to check out how good the offerings are nor do I vouch for the authenticity or reliability of the company, but it’s worth a look. The student blog is http://tulanestudentinfo.blogspot.com/

I went and took a look. Just glancing at the brand names I don’t think any of us are going to take them up on the offer. 150 dollar jeans.
I am hoping to not replace the calculator. I will know in a few days after she registers for classes. We were just commenting before she left for Tulane how she had taken such care of her calculator that she still had it 4 yrs later.
It doesn’t look good for getting the items anytime soon after reading the latest update.

I thought the same thing mom60, except I saw $195 jeans. But hey, it was 35% off!! LOL

mom60 and concerned - yes, that “deal” from goclothing.com is meaningless here, too. S doesn’t care about those brands, nor wear any of those styles. Nor could I find a single pair of the rather ordinary cargo pants he does wear. Maybe the fashionistas?

We are off on our replacement shopping trip today. Mostly consumabales which is good. We have “made do” with stuff we already have around the house in most cases, since we are in driving distance this time.

So far, socks are the only replacement clothes. We will have to replace cargo pants as the weather cools if we can’t get into Tulane before then.

Our only splurge: S wants a TV and we will spring for the base price model (ca. $119). He will upgrade it a bit for larger and built in DVD, adding in his own $50 bucks. Not too bad. He has been given a single room (!) at Bates and says “no one” will visit his room if no TV. Okay, we are indulging him here. So shoot me. :D

Indulge away. These kids need an little extra TLC. So much of the excitement was lost with this tragedy, and I hope that when the freshmen finally hit campus that all of the orientation programs (plus maybe a few more) are held for these kids. I will donate the first $100 for a huge party!

Yes, we are indulging here also. Son is going to live at home at attend a local university. Not exactly how he imagined spending his senior year of college after living in an off campus house with 3 friends for 2 years! We bought a new tv for the old playroom and are setting that room up for him to have some space for himself. He is pushing for a DVD burning and I’m about ready to cave in. He really is going to have an easy semester with only 2-3 classes and maybe 2-3 8 hour shifts at the hospital. I still feel so bad for him, but he is coming around and is doing well.

This senior class at Tulane is going to have a graduation to beat all graduations held in New Orleans!! I’m getting excited just thinking about seeing my son graduate :-)

$150 jeans ! LOL I don;t even have to go look.

We’ve replaced some clothes and all the toiletries and first aid stuff and 1 set of sheets and towels-- and now I have two sets of charges in the $500 range for books on my credit card. Luckily dd is in Oregon so can use many of the clothes she had left behind when she headed for NOLA. She’s down to 1 pair of sneakers and 1 pair of everyday shows – size 5 is not so easy to replace.

“I will donate the first $100 for a huge party!”

Concerneddad, I will donate the second $100. And while we’re at it, why not make it for all of the students? The upper classmen will be so happy to be back that they will probably feel like freshmen all over again! And what about the hard working administration and staff - and heck - what about the alums? We better start now because they’re going to need every crawfish in Louisiana!

And I will donate the third $100.

A little more replacement here: Couldn’t s-t-r-e-t-c-h our old twin sheets onto the puny-looking but nevertheless XL twin bed. Forgot all about that, as Butler at Tulane was regular twin. And, since we brought these sheets from home, they are not the new improved extra deep. So the sheets almost cover the bed for now, and I am poised to click the cursor for on-line ordering at BB&B once S gets me his mailbox #.

pokey - I am with you in spirit on that graduation 2006 in New Orleans. For the next four classes, there will be no graduation anywhere which will be able to hold a candle to Tulane’s in terms of the energy which will fill that room/arena/stadium for the kids, staff and family. I can’t wait.

I am just waiting for my son and the other TEMS kids to find a place to live. As you can imagine, housing in Baton Rogue is very hard to come by right now. Although there are possibilities that some families would each take in a TEMS kid, they are holding out hope that they can find a place where they can “be college kids too.” And, if you don’t know what I mean by that, don’t ask, because I will not say anymore! LOL

concerneddad,
Send them here to me. When my son brought home friends for the evacuation, I felt like I was running a dorm! Kids were sleeping everywhere; not really sure which kids slept in which room and by the second night I gave up trying to police them! While I am use to my own kids wondering the house is assorted states or undress, I was a bit surprised to open my bedroom door one morning to find a male walking around in his boxers. He didn’t flinch, but I sure did!

I know that each and everyone of them was happy to be heading back home although they would prefer to be back at their homes in New Orleans without their parents.

LOL, Concernedded. After a year on his on in NO, son came home today and announced that being a commuter student stinks. Hopefully, he won’t be one long term!

pokey, I would not do that to you – you are too nice! LOL
