How Much Time in Math in Prep Schools?

I’m wondering how much time students in prep schools spend in math classes. For instance, my 7th grader currently has math class four times a week for 40 minutes a class. Is 160 minutes a week in class a lot or a little for math in the leading prep schools? I can’t remember how much time I spent in math class when I was 12 years old, but it seems that it was more than 160 minutes a week. (Obviously, these figures do not include homework.)

Any information would be very much appreciated. If you can name schools, so much the better. Thanks.

Well when I was in 7th grade I had 45 minutes everyday, monday-friday. I don’t know about boarding school though.

At Exeter D has math Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 50 min. Friday is 75 min. Optional math club meets twice a week 1 hr on Wednesday and 3 hours on Sunday.

I think a lot will depend on how the instructional minutes are used.
My high school Geometry teacher used to take roll, pass out worksheets and then depart to the teacher’s lounge to play darts for the remainder of the class. There were technically 50 minutes of instruction per day, but the reality was just a few minutes a day.

I go to Culver our classes are 80 min and math is considered a solid so we have it mon-fri

my school (private) can have 180 or 270 minutes a week. math is rotated in 90 minute classes.

actually 160 isn’t bad i guess. im just guessing… but maybe 220 consistently in a math room a week? i dunno. i could be totally wrong

My son has math in 50 minute classes, 4-5 times a week depending on the rotation. NMH for example has block scheduling so they will have a longer class period, but for only half the year.
There are requirements about instructional hours from the orgs that give accrediation to schools. I’m sure in the end, the independant schools all have pretty much the same total hours of math for a course. It’s also why schools who have Saturday classes generally have a few more days of vacation and/or get out earlier than those that don’t - it’s about the number of instructional hours.

at Groton I have math 4 days a week…3 40 min sessions and 1 55 minute session
