How much to ask for a raise?

I am 29 years old and my father has passed and i have never known my biological mother. If i have no assitance and currently make $40k a year… Will asking for $50k at my next annual review be too much income to recieve financial aid? I plan to go to CSUN. I also believe i am likely to recieve this raise considering the role i have taken over.

I know it is impossible to tell, at least based on what my FA advisors have tols me at my cc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as i am conpletely in the dark as to what i should do.

Im not sure if earning more will hurt me in the long run.
Thank you.

Is it common practice where you work to ask for a 25% raise?

That’s a hefty increase to ask for unless you’ve received a promotion or have taken on substantially more responsibility in your job. I wouldn’t recommend asking for so much unless you can substantiate with concrete reasons why you deserve so much more than you are currently making.

Financial aid at CSUN is limited to Cal Grants and Pell Grants…and loans and work study

Doesn’t sound like you’d qualify for a Cal Grant or a Pell Grant.

Are you single? Your EFC on $40k of income (if you’re a single person household) would be highish.

What is your FAFSA EFC?

For the sake of answering the question asked, let’s assume she gets a 25% raise. Early in my career, I nearly doubled my salary changing employers. I suppose anything is possible.

To address the questions above… At my 6 month review i was given a raise from 32k to 40k. I started in a customer support role and moved into a role doing marketing and compliance. I have the mentality of never saying no and always getting the job done. My boss indicated that i should ask for more but i did not because i felt i wanted to prove myself before pricing myself out of the company by becoming a liability because i cost too much. The financial analyst left and i was offered a chance to take over the role (because i am studying finance). I worked 50 to 60 hours a week over my summer break to make sure i met their expectations… I believe i have paased the test. If they offer 6k will accept with no negotiations.

If being single and 40k seems like a lot for a single person… I will go forward with the expectation that i will need to pay for all of my tuition and books.

Thank you so much for your input.

Congrats on doing so well in your job! It makes sense that with new responsibilities and skills, you are worth more.

Sounds like you should count on less FA. The FA office at your school would be the ones to know but sounds like they aren’t giving you a clear answer.

I’m wondering. If you get the raise, what is the expectation as far as hours a week you would work and is that going to be compatible with going to college?

Also does the company offer a tuition benefit to employees?
