How much traffic before there's a problem?

At orientation they said we had to register any computer we use with them, so they would be able to see how much traffic is going where. Are we allowed essentially unlimited traffic, or is there some maximum we’re not allowed to exceed? If there is what are the consequences for exceeding it?

what are you talking about?
If you referring to internet bandwidth…it is unlimited.

What exactly did they say?

haha. Thats funny. Yeah, theres no time limit on the internet.

Can they really measure that?
If they have wiifi anyone can access, right???

Yes they have a limit on bandwidth if they want to impose on you for no reason…

I developed this options (I dont have enough money to trade futures. Futures would have been a lot more profitable and easier to use a system on) trading system that data-mines prices from many sources 24/7, calculate delta, gamma, vega, deltacash, gamma cash and automatically and continuously trades and hedge positions, reduce exposure while skewing the portfolio based on regression models that indicates potential trends and pricing descrepancies. I have one dedicated computer that does that automatically without me monitoring and automatically sends me warnings when things go wrong.

RESCOMP put me on limited bandwidth of 1kb/sec citing (continuous unreasonable/potentially dangerous use of bandwidth) at around 3:45 EST. My system sent me an automatic warning informing me of “lost network connection”. I was still in class and didn’t make it back on time. With 15 minutes to market close, I tried to manually hedge my positions in the classroom based on mental math. Being in the volatile times did not help. Most of my positions were not hedged and I lost 11k (30% of my then portfolio) because my portfolio was crazily skewed without hedges ( unluckily on the wrong side that day…hey… i could have made mad money too lol)

Those rescomp people should just go to hell. I wonder how much bandwidth datamining and trading actually use, and how much more “potentially dangerous” it is compared to the guys across the hallway download movies 24/7 and nothing happens to them…sheese

Good grief!!! Good thing there are people like you out there because I didn’t understand 90% of your post!!!

bearcats, get a mac and an iphone and tether them when att comes out with the service…then you can make (or loose) money all day : )

I’d have been inclined to have filed a complaint with rescomp. They should have put you on notice for excessive usage first. Not rocket science to give you a 24 hr warning bot msg.

Oh, and sun_shine, indeed they can monitor that. You are all tethered to the mothership with wifi : )
And bearcats, it was probably your “mining” script that they viewed to be “potentially dangerous.”

Bearcats, since I have no idea what your program was, how much bandwidth was it using? Was it just collecting a bunch of numbers, or was it really using a lot of traffic? Any idea at what amount it becomes a problem? Is it like they may impose temporary limits on the heaviest users durning peak times, or is it just after a threshold they cut you off?

I know they’re not going to put a time limit, but is there a traffic limit? If it’s unlimited can I move several TBs a month and no one will care? Not that I need to move several TBs a month, but if I were to…

So, no one knows?

They don’t out and out say, but here’s the section of the agreement that pertains I think to bearcats problem by definition; first, the useage standard and server callout, and then in the case of the latter the scrips could have been vulnerable to malware due to the round-up nature of the feed or the bot approach deemed to carry the potential for piggyback malicious activity or alternately the code written in a way that was vulnerable to a hack; the constant connection and updating might also be considered more than “average.” Not defending rescomp’s action here, or the lack of specificity…just showing you part of the agreement you sign to get access:

* I understand that excessive use of the network is subject to restriction and sanctions. Excessive use is defined as using an amount of network resources beyond what is comparable to a single, interactive network session such as web browsing.

 • I understand that servers and other services are only permitted if they utilize a sufficiently small portion of network resources. This includes but is not limited to the sharing of music and other media files.

Network Integrity

* I will not perform any action that would impair the function or compromise the integrity of the computer network or result in the denial or degradation of another user’s access to the network.

 • I will not alter or extend the network by adding any equipment, such as – but not limited to – wireless access points, routers or hardware firewalls. I will not alter network wiring, equipment or network jacks.
 • I am aware that as a condition of connecting my system to the network, my system may be subject to network monitoring and vulnerability scanning to ensure the security and reliability of the network and to prevent my system from being vulnerable to attack or being used to launch attacks.

Hope that helps. But seriously, get something you can tether to cell service and you’d be good.

Thanks :)

I appreciate it and need to type this sentence to fill up some annoying 10 character minimum for posts and like this better than the “(10 char)” thing.
