How much UG research exp is typical?

Hey everyone,

I graduated this fall from UCSD biochemistry but have no research exp. If I plan to apply to UCI or USC for a phd next cycle what would be the best moves to make to strengthen my application? I’ve been considering seeing if a professor will take me on as a volunteer researcher but even for a year would that be enough experience and would taking graduate courses as a non-degree student help? Other stats: gpa 3.5, mcat 33P. Also with the new GRE coming out next year should I wait or take the current GRE?

Thanks

With a degree in biochemistry, you might be able to get a paid position in a lab, at UCSD or elsewhere, depending on the need. A year of working in a lab full-time should be sufficient for a graduate school application.

I suggest taking the GRE as soon as you can do so with reasonable preparation, just so you can get it out of the way. If you don’t like your scores, you can wait for the new GRE, look at the practice tests, and decide whether the changes play into your strengths.
