How much will a B in a standard CP class hurt me?

So because of Coronavirus, my spanish grade is based on one assessment. Grade weightage at my school is such that 75% of the grade is based on assessments and 25% on homework. So I am wondering whether colleges will take things like that into consideration, or whether I should go for pass/fail in the course as it is an elective.

Colleges don’t see the weight of assignments in your grade. They only see your grading scale (what counts as an A/B/C/etc, how gpa is calculated). If you’re not confident in your grade, go for the pass/fail.

They won’t see it as hiding something? So the policy at my school is its credit no credit for electives unless approval from both students and teachers.

What is wrong with a B? If you think you cannot get anything better than a C, then I would consider pass/no pass. A B is perfectly fine.

Spanish is a core class not an elective at least for College admissions.

Take that ‘B’ and smile all the way to your next semester of HS.

What grade are you in?

Colleges and universities look for upward trends in your grades and an increasing level of difficulty in the coursework. If you can show such in future years you are on track to doing much of what you need to prepare to present yourself when it comes time to filling out the applications.

Junior lmao. Prolly shouldn’t worry but I feel like it should be a “easy” class. I’d be okay with a B if it were AP/Honors… just a bit worried in a not honors class

Also will GPA inflation hurt? Like people picking/choosing which courses to have pass/fail.

We have no way to know how colleges will see GPA inflation based on pass/fail. We have no precedent for this considering most high schools are not pass/fail. My guess is that to be as fair as possible, colleges won’t hold it against students, in the same way test-optional schools don’t hold not submitting scores against students.

UC said this to email inquiry:
“ Thank you for your inquiry. If your school implements a “pass/fail” system then we will not have grades from any applicants from that school, so you will not be at a disadvantage. Please let me know if you need anything else.”

@Alamere, I hope that response from the UC system eases your mind.

You can believe in the integrity of their response.

You will need to meet their foreign language requirements to be considered for admission, so do make sure you are keeping on track with those. (The question posed above, how Spanish class serves as an elective at your high school, will have to be examined with UC admission as your aim.)

Yeah, I’m gonna keep the B. Since UC system says it effectively seems null, I’m not super worried about this semester (school year is basically over for us, there’s only AP Exams left), and I really am only aiming for UC Berkeley, Davis, Santa Barbara or Los Angeles… One question I do have is whether schools will consider this semester when determining our ELC for the UCs.

Regarding ELC, this will have to be a decision made throughout the UC system and nothing has been determined yet other than they will accept pass/fail grades for this semester.

You realize that ELC only guarantees you UC Merced if you are not accepted into your choice UC and that is only if they have spots available.

Also I would not limit your UC choices to the above schools since it is 1 application, it would be a good idea to include Irvine, San Diego and Santa Cruz just in case. UC’s tend to very unpredictable and having a couple of extra options is nice to have in the end.

Yeah, of course, I am going to apply to almost every UC (except Riverside because I don’t like the inland empire). Those are the 4 I most want to go to. San Diego has 20 of class of 2020 going there and I am not in good standing with a few of them, so I’d prefer not to go there.

I really hope you didn’t lose sleep over this, but I am guessing you did. Lo siento. Take the B and pat yourself on the back

I did not actually. I lose sleep over more important things like my social life and mental health. Not that social life > academics, but at night that’s more my focus.
