hey guys, first time user. So I live in the Albany area in New York, I’m a senior and am taking a course at my school called science research. Its an honors course and in it I am performing original research that I plan on publishing in a scientific journal before the end of my senior year (if you want more info on the course go to the University at Albany website and look for “Science Research in the High School”). My SAT score was a 1230 on the new scale and my GPA is 3.3 (4.0 weighted) and am taking 4 honors/AP classes this semester. From what I can tell, I’m on the low to medium end chance to get into both NYU and Cornell based on raw academics on core courses like math and science. So do you guys think this course will help me much?
It’s a great course. I am familiar with that research project course. It’s very rigorous and you should be commended for taking it. Seek out help along the way from your parents and teachers, and the researcher that you will be working with. Whatever you accomplish in that course, it will serve you well as you move forward in your academic career and later in life. Your researcher mentor can become one of your mentors for life. It’s a great project. You should also be able to compete with Intel–if your school participates.
However, if and only if you raise the rest of your GPA do you have a shot at Cornell. You will need about a 4.0 average unweighted plus the amazing research project.
Your GPA and scores don’t make you likely for NYU and a near impossibility for Cornell – despite this worthwhile class. I’m assuming you’ve applied to or been accepted at some other colleges already? It’s rather late in the application season…
