Of course the 4.0 for all years is better, but how far off is a person who rose to a 4.0?

Heres me:
1st semester frosh: about 3.0uw 4.0w
2nd frosh: same
1st soph: same
2nd soph: 3.9uw 4.9w (this is unofficially the best in the class)
1st jun: same i hope(!)
2nd jun: same i hope

i dont have spectacular sat’s (first time i got a 640m 700v 700w or 2040) im working on it though. i have the standard awards/clubs/leadership positions and a hook. oh crap sorry this sounds like a chance thread now. i’ll stop here.

The 4.0 person is much better off. Lots of schools report avg GPAs, and your GPA will be around 3.45, which is pretty low. However, if you actually do end up getting 3.9 every semester (which you know you can’t count on), they will probably see that you’ll have a high chance of success in college and that you matured, and you’ll have an advantage over people with 3.45 all semesters.

wow i cant belive someone actually answered this thread! i figured everyone would check it out and suddenly lose interest and let it die.

so anyways, im screwed i guess. im totally normal except for flaws like bad rank/gpa (though it is rising) and bad sats. also i did only 3 ec’s in my frosh and soph years (but i was good)

i do have some redeeming qualities. i have a passion for running (i ran a marathon) and i have a lot of ec’s now (leadership/awards the whole thing) oh well, i doubt my marathon hook can save me now. :(

wait though, i did take the hardest classes in my school and i have the most ap classes in my school (i’ll have ten by the end of the year) still though i was bad in honors classes and not in my ap’s. kinda the opposite of what you expect huh?

What if I had … REALLY low grade in sophomore year, and then got a lot better? What if I went from … >_< 5 C’s in sophomore year to straight A’s in senior year?

;__; I have pretty good activities, and not bad SAT (760 CR, 760 M, 710 W; combined of 2230). But… My GPA sucks CRAP because of my sophomore grades. And I have … like… 0.6-0.7 difference between my weighted and unweighted, because I took like hardest courses available, all honors/AP/IB.

Jlime- usually, someone who considers a 1340 low (which the OP stated), would consider a 3.4 GPA as low.

Shark_bite- I think running a marathon is a great hook. Michigan also does not consider freshman year grades. If you get 3.9 both semesters junior year, your Michigan GPA would be around 3.7 (depending how you did in academic courses). So I think it’d be a match, maybe a safe match.

yeah but they do consider soph grades. i did bad the first semester of sophmore year along with all of frosh year. to be honest, with the gpa curve at our school and the fact that i was in all honors, my 4.1w (i was estimating for all years but that is about how it looked) was enough to get me into 11/360. now however with 2 aditional semester of suck under my belt, im ranked 34/360.

so yeah i know rising is better then falling but how much worse is a person who rose to a 4.0 when compared to a person who always had a 4.0? am i out of the game because of it?

btw yeah im talking about the ivy league and top publics and privates.

I don’t know of any schools that do not consider sophomore year grades. But, not considering freshman grades will definately put you in the game, as a 3.7 is pretty good, and that will still include a rising trend. For schools that do consider freshman grades, I don’t think you’d be out of the game, but Ivies would all be reaches for you. They would be reaches anyway though because of the SAT scores.

yeah im working on the sats. im hoping for at least a 2100. i also think i have a good shot at getting at least a 32 on the act. a 34 on the act is realistic for me. hopfully a good act can make up for a bad sat.
