How much would a "W" hurt my chances?

I’m going to a CC and am in regular classes at the moment. On my college’s website it said that I had to wait until I got a certain number of credits before being able to take Honors courses. After finding a pdf file that was buried in the website a few days ago, I found out that if I had over a 550 on my math or verbal sat score that I could take honors courses. I got a 720 on my verbal and so I qualify. I’d been planning on waiting until next semester to start Honors courses but now that I see that I can take them now, I want to do it. When I apply I don’t want Cornell to think that I didn’t want to challenge myself, so I want to withdraw from my regular classes and take the Honors courses instead. How bad would a “W” on my transcript look from getting out of the regular classes?

Having started in regular classes, can you switch to honors classes next semester or are you bound to a particular set once you start?

I’ll get an offer from the Honors Institute next semester as long as I keep up my GPA (4.0.) though the requirement I believe is a 3.5. You’re not bound to a particular type so I can take them next semester. Would it be best to just wait?

Yes, I think it would be better if you waited. A W could be anything from an A to a D, and the admissions officers might not give you the benefit of the doubt. Stay in the class, do well, and then switch to the honors program fall semester.

Good luck!
