How much would this GPA factor in?

Hi, I’m an Asian female at a very competitive (one of the best in the nation) in high school. I just wanted to know whether this would mean automatic reject from a lot of the more competitive schools (such as Rice, Vanderbilt, Ivies).

All my grades from freshmen year to junior year 1st semester were very high (4.0 unweighted), but 2nd semester junior year my GPA dropped significantly from a 4.0 to a 3.3 (cum around a 3.6 for junior year, unweighted). However, my EC’s are pretty good (Intel ISEF 2nd in Category, Siemens Semi, published, etc.) and my SAT is 2290. I’m also working on writing really good essays, but I was just wondering if my grades would be an automatic reject?

(Sorry, this isn’t a chance me thread. I just want to see if i should change any apply choices, and I’ve been worried that my 2nd semester grades are going to affect me really badly.) Thanks for all your help

It may not mean an automatic reject, but it will raise some concerns. You’ll undoubtedly need to address (and have your GC address) the reasons for the drop in grades. If you rebound this semester, you may still be OK. You don’t mention having had applied anywhere EA/ED; if you have, expect to be deferred or rejected. Do you have safety schools lined up, just in case?

Thank you so much for the help, and I did apply to safeties (already got in). My senior year grades are much higher. :)
