My daughter has been asked to give private art lessons to a student. She was asking me how much to charge for an hour lesson. Frankly I have no idea. My daughter has graduated from RISD, has gallery representation and an impressive CV. LOL (But then I’m her Mom). Has anybody has some experience with this sort of thing??? Thanks for taking your time to help.

Ask your D to inquire among her friends as to how much they’re charging in the area. We paid maybe $20/hour or so for group lessons in our home one summer (4 kids). Sorry, can’t remember well as it was probably 10-15 years ago. It was a price we & the instructor were happy with.

My sister tutors & charges about $50/hour in her home or at the school. Maybe check out craigslist in your area & see what others are charging for tutoring and that sort of thing. Maybe call the local academy of arts & see if they have art lessons & what they charge.

Yeah. Good ideas. She did ask around and nobody else tutors. I also paid 20$ an hour about 15 years ago for private lessons. This would be a single student. No group.

The local flagship U’s art department might be able to give you a ballpark range of what their students are paying/charging for art lessons. Most tutors in our neighborhood are running about $50/hour but different neighborhoods charge different rates. I would see art lessons as on par with foreign language tutoring or most other individualized tutoring, I guess. If you can’t find rates for art lessons per se, I’d try setting it similarly to tutoring rates in your area.

Well…similar but not really the same…private instrument lessons around here are about $40 a lesson…usually 30-45 minutes in length.

Agree that if she can’t ask around as to what others get for private art lessons, then private music lessons would be kinda the same and ask around about that. But these things also can vary in different regions, etc. Believe it or not, my kid (who has a BFA in Musical Theater) gives a private piano lesson (doesn’t even have a degree in that but does play professionally) to a 7th grader in Manhattan and is paid $100/hr! (the family offered that rate)

Considering your D has a degree as well, I can’t imagine her getting any less than $40 or $45/hour.

I think it should start at a minimum of $50/hour, especially if your D has to drive to get there; more if the region you live in supports it. Tutors in most subjects around my area run about $50/hour and more, especially when the tutors have a degree (elementary education, special ed & others). More rural areas where the cost of living is lower might have lower rates while more urban areas with higher cost of living & transportation may be higher.

Can you look on Craigslist for reference points to draw from?

Thank you for all the responses. I wanted to give feedback to help the next young adult out there with this question. My daughter has been teaching a private student for 2 years now. She is a RISD graduate and a practicing artist. She is paid about 85$/hr. (2015 price)
Wow–that seems like a very good rate! Congrats to your S!
