How necessary is it to retake classes that you've withdrawn from?

Last semester I signed up for a beginning spanish course, but having some knowledge of spanish decided to test out of the beginning level & advanced two courses higher. However with my schedule/work load from that semester I couldn’t devote the time necessary to study for spanish & found that it was too difficult & not of priority so I opted to drop it.

I received a W in the course thinking I would have time to retake it, but what I want to know is how necessary is it to retake it? Since its a language course, could I just take another language course (or actually do the beginning spanish course) in order to satisfy UC’s? From what I’ve heard UC’s don’t pay much mind to W’s & just void them while looking through one’s transcript, so would it really matter to them whether or not I retake it? (not sure how important this piece of information would be, but I have 2 W’s total on my transcript)

Thanks!

One W isn’t going to be a problem with any UC as long as you have a strong GPA, EC’s and a solid essay. Well, they wouldn’t care anyway, I just wanted to point out what they do care about. They do not “void” it though. W’s stay with you forever for the most part.

I have about 8 W’s and applying to UCLA with little worry. I retook 3 of them. But I also have a 4.0, great EC’s and a strong reply to prompts.

Good luck. :)

Right. W’s don’t matter as much for UCs within a certain point. You can do a few, don’t make it excessive though. For private schools its better to take the class once and go. For the language requirement, you don’t actually have to retake spanish. It can be any language. Japanese, French, Swahili…

You don’t have to retake any classes with Ws. Simply explain them.

The UCs couldn’t care less about Ws.
