How nervous do you get when you apply to a department at your college?

I know everyone that goes to a big state university goes through this, but how do you deal with applying to a major and knowing that basically two years of your college career maybe wasted? Looking at the statistics it’s basically a 50/50 shot that I would get into business, and it’s supposed to be very difficult to get in at my school. I worry about getting rejected and having to reapply again, change major or even change schools…

Thanks.

Just have a backup plan and you’ll feel better. If you’re applying to business–check to see what other similar majors are available in the main college.

E.g.:
Interested in actuarial science–consider stats or math majors as a backup
Accounting/finance–consider econ if it’s not in the business school
Marketing–consumer science or psychology (or stats if you were looking at marketing research)

Also, maybe you have other interests you could pursue. Trust me, try out a few different courses. Business school sucks; once you realize that you’ll want other options.

Okay thanks. Also, am I in trouble if I had a bad first quarter. I am a freshman and I switched from Engineering to Business. Grades:

Fall:
General Chem I: 2.4
Calc II: 1.8
Psych 101: 3.6

Winter (estimated):
Intro to Econ: 3.3-3.6
Engl Comp: 3.7-3.9
5 credit Elective: 3.7-3.9
2 credit Elective: 3.8-4.0

Spring:
Intro to Macro
Intro to Statistics
5 credit Elective

I don’t know about Washington, but a 2.6 (or worse if psych is less credits than the other classes) first semester at UW Madison would probably require you to reapply junior year.

Look at your grades…You did really poorly in calc, and econ is your worst grade this semester. You’re doing really well in psych and english…Are you sure you want business school? If your grade is any representation of your interest in these classes, then it seems as if you enjoy liberal arts–especially humanities.

Can you take one of the intro financial accounting courses at your business school before you apply? That (along with a finance course) will give you a taste of b-school courses.

First off, ill add a +1 to justtotalks’ comments about your liberal arts classes.

Now, to the business… I wouldnt worry about your econ grade this semester, econ is definitely more challenging than english comp… However a 1.8 in calc II is a big deal, i’d be surprised if it counted towards a major. Feel free to correct me if im wrong but i’m going to guess you took AP calc in high school and therefore qualified for calc II because of it?

I advise incoming students at wwu, and i see this a lot. Often students assume that if they did well on the AP calc exam they’ll be fine in calc II. However often it ends up being harder than they thought… Just my experience

I would suggest either re-taking calc II or perhaps even taking calc I. I know it may seem frustrating, but you’ll be better off if you actually understand the material. I’m fairly confident you would be admitted if you received a decent grade in 124/125 if you do decide to retake.

Okay thanks. I emailed advising and they told me that I should just put my Math 124 credit on my application for the math requirement. They told me that the Math 125 grade won’t affect my pre-req GPA in anyway and that no more math classes are required for business. Also, about the Elective courses I took during Winter Quarter … EVERYONE gets a 3.6+. I just took those classes to bring up my GPA while I reconsidered my options. Those were Music History classes btw … I have no background in music and low interest. I loved Econ and it’s the favorite class I’ve taken so far.

Update on grades:
Micro Econ: 3.5
Engl Comp: 3.8
Music History: 3.7
A “clapping for credit” course: 4.0
