I just made this account to ask this question, but I am currently waiting for a decision to come back from Emory Oxford ED1. Do you think my chances are bad if my unweighted GPA is:2.875 Considering the fact that this trend is present?
Freshman Year:1.04
Sophomore Year:3.75
Junior Year:3.86
Note: I have a 32 act super-scored to a 33, in addition to a 1430 on the SAT
well it all depends, a 1.04 is in the 50s; is there any logical explanation for why your grades were so low -family illness, mental situation; problems adapting- or did you simply not try in freshman year and then tried to bounce back from sophomore onward. I think a 1.04 is hard to bounce back from no matter what the upward trend was and emory is hard to get into even without things considered but at the same time it is taken into consideration wether you explained why grades were so low and its not as if gpa is the only thing taken into consideration; there are supplements and test scores which you scored well on. I would take this all with a grain of salt; you have ED, test scores, upward trend, and the essay/supplements on your side but if their is no reasonable explanation for a 1.04 it could heavily affect your admission but just try to stay hopeful and whatever the outcome you know you pulled it together by junior year and learned from whatever the situation was
@alasiatast I had family troubles that year and was diagnosed with ADHD. My personal essay is about how I faced 9th grade as an insurmountable obstacle, but I over came it in the end.
Wow thats certainly a great turn-around. I have to admit its quite impressive. I think they will definitely notice it.
@sgopal2 Thanks! If I could ask, do you think it makes me a moderately strong candidate? Considering I have a notable story and strong EC’s? In addition to recs from teachers who both hold ph.d’s.
Just based on your scores alone, you are at about the 60th percentile for Oxford/Emory. The overall GPA is low, but the last few semesters will surely impress them. I honestly don’t know if this makes you a strong candidate or not.
But it certainly makes for a good story. I hope you capitalized by telling this in your essays. Having a compelling story can certainly overcome many obstacles. Wishing you the best.
Thanks for the input! As you’ve said I can only hope from here on out, but hope is something we need to maintain, right? I wish you the best in all your future endeavors too my man
@nutdonny
Emory does not utilize freshman year grades, your fine. Apply to Emory and Oxford.
@VANDEMORY1342 Would you say my chances for oxford are fairly high? Can I be hopeful?
