I live about 10 minutes away from my college. What’s the general rule on living off campus / at home? Is it allowed to live at home during weekends, or can you go the whole week living at home?
Check your school’s website. Most colleges exempt local students from requirements to live on campus.
Probably no restrictions (check your local campus rules) - as long as you paid for the room, you can use it or not as you prefer. YMMV.
It would be unusual for there to be restrictions on you having to sleep there. Check your school’s housing website. Having overnight guests for multiple days on end is the more commonly restricted/regulated problem schools address.
Usually there aren’t a lot of rules unless it’s a strict religious school, but you should probably just live at home if you want to spend entire weeks there.
Great question!
Although my school requires first-year students to live on campus, my roommate went home every other weekend without restrictions.
As posts #1 and #2 mentioned, check with your school.
Unless you’re at one of those creeper religious schools, no one is going to know or care whether you’re on campus or not.
This isn’t summer camp. There are no bed checks.
May I suggest that at first you SHOULD NOT GO HOME…you want to be making friends at college. You can only do that if you are around.
Why bother paying the (often exorbitant) room and board fees if you just plan on sleeping at home? Why not just commute?
Commuters can make friends, especially if they stay on campus in the evenings when clubs typically meet. Ten minutes away is nothing, so don’t pay for the dorm room if you don’t really want to live in it.
School requires that I “live on campus” though. I assume that doesn’t mean I can’t sleep off campus some nights, but I still need to pay for the dorm.
Don’t they make an exception for students who live nearby with parents? I would definitely ask someone in the housing office.
Oxy is a college that believes students should live and learn together. They require 3 years of on campus living and I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t allow off campus living even with nearby parents.
That said, it means you have to pay for room and board for 3 years even if you spend most of your time at home.
OP has mentioned in their post history that s/he intends on transferring after first year - maybe the school OP transfers to will have different housing requirements. I think UCI is on the top of their list.
