How often do you ask for help?

How often do you go to office hours, ask other students for help, ask advisors, etc.?

I’m a freshman and my first quarter I never asked anyone for help but this quarter I probably go to office hours like twice a month. I do email advisers or my professors a lot with single questions since I don’t want to go to their office just for a question that could be answered in a couple of minutes. I think next quarter I might go in for help more often because I find that it’s nice that professors actually know who I am and how I want to succeed in class. It is also benefiting my grade. How about you?

Thanks.

Whenever I need help. Depends on the class really. I email my Comp Sci prof a lot because some of the problems are really confusing (and a lot them have mistakes that she only tells us about after we start them >.>).

As for my other classes, I rarely, if ever, ask for help unless it’s to clarify the specifics of an assignment.

Sometimes my professors are really (and unintentionally) vague.

You should go. Here’s why (from the POV of a former teacher):

(1) If you are on a borderline grade, they’ll be more likely to bump you up because you’ve shown interest in the subject. It’s almost like class participation, but without the class.
(2) One day, you’ll need letters of recommendation. You want profs to know who you are.
(3) If profs think you are interested, they’ll be more likely to pass along info on internships, unique travel and conference opportunities, etc. It’s never to early to learn how to network, and your profs might just be the connection you need.
(4) And, of course, it helps you with the subject matter.
