So I was talking to my mom about the school I’m most likely going to end up at next year, and the conversation turned to how urban the campus is. (It’s in the middle of a city). I said that even though the campus is relatively large it still has a distinct campus and you can tell where the campus ends and where the city starts. Then I made the mistake of bringing up public transportation. I mentioned how the public transport wasn’t too bad, and how you don’t need a car to get around.
All of a sudden she got very serious and was like “I don’t want you going off campus. You don’t know how the area is. If you need anything just call me.” (We’re about 2 hours away)
I was like “Uh, yeah…”
This seems a little ridiculous to me. How am I supposed to buy anything? Go shopping? What about entertainment? I mean, theoretically, I guess one could go 4 years without stepping off campus…

So how often do you, personally, go off your campus?

As a commuter student at my school… I practically leave campus every single day before it turns dark.

I do know that the people at my school do head out to Boston on occasion, but most people just stick around campus simply because the school is situated in an upper class suburban area with few attractions and little to do.

Does your mother need to know about your forays into the city? Just go with a bunch of friends as a measure of protection, and you will be fine. There’s no need to tell your mother too much anymore. You are an adult, so take advantage of the fact that you are 18/19/whatever.

Well my apartment is technically off campus, but I won’t count that.

Excluding my sport (where we have to drive 20 min away to get to the gym), I get away from my school’s bubble maybe once a week. (To go out for dinner, see a movie, random excursions, buy groceries, etc).

Our metro system is really awesome. For the record, I go to school in St. Louis.

i go off campus most days, but im in a small city. i usually go to get some cigs, food, are we go to some places to hang out. i think its a nice to get out of the bubble of my campus

Besides downtown and the neighborhoods of houses and apartments within 0-15 minute walking distance I rarely leave campus. I personally like the ideal of having a car so I can explore outside the inner city more.

I don’t actually know where my campus ends for sure, but I would guess I go a few blocks off at least once a week. Really, seriously off, maybe once every 6 weeks or so.

I arrive on campus and leave campus daily. Most upperclassmen here live just off campus in the surrounding neighborhood.

When I was a freshman/sophomore and living on campus, I still left campus almost every day. The food/supplies on campus are really overpriced. Plus there’s a coffee shop, vegetarian restaurant, and a few bars in town that are nice places to chill to do homework or hang out on the weekend. I took the metro or buses into the city almost every weekend. Buses/the metro also go to a nearby mall and movie theater that we went to pretty often as well.

I can’t imagine not leaving campus with frequency. Though the campus is beautiful it would get really boring otherwise. :

I live on campus at a school that’s notoriously “bubble” like. I leave campus about every other week… Which I guess isn’t too much but I don’t need to too often, and there’s so much on campus to keep me busy. To answer your questions sophistry, I can buy almost everything I need on campus or online (I do leave if I need something specific though). I can also “entertain” myself on campus, lol. It’s really not a big deal at all. My school is in a suburban area so off campus isn’t like thrillingly fun or anything. If I go a little farther (~1hr) I get to a city so sometimes I do that but not super often.
I should try to make an effort to leave more though.

If your (prospective) school is urban though, it’s unrealistic not to leave campus. Once you get used to things and show your mom how not a big deal it is, i’m sure she’ll loosen up a bit.

I leave campus quite a bit, to go home and visit friends, family, and work. When I stay at school I also go off campus because, well, frankly there’s nothing to do in my college town.

But really, you’re an adult. Of course you’re not going to know the area, you’re new there! Don’t do anything stupid, like going out by yourself at night when you’re not familiar with the area yet. But you’ll be okay. Just go out with friends at first and see the city. You’re getting to experience living in a new city (and state?). Definitely take advantage of it!
