How Often Does ACT Test Your Own Science Knowledge?

Princeton Review 1,296 ACT questions

p.389
Chlorophyll is typically associated with which of the following chemical reactions?
f. Binary fission
g.Condensation
h Photosynthesis
j. Respiration

Green algae is classified in which kingdom of organism
f. Animalia
g. Plantae
h. Fungi
j. Protista

I swear I thought the ACT didn’t require any outside knowledge for science. Yes, these questions are easy but there is a possibility that someone hasn’t gone over this in their classes. Has anyone else encountered questions on the science portion that required outside information? How often/how many questions will ACT put on the science section?

(no the answers were not in the passage anywhere)

0-2 questions on every test involve prior knowledge, but usually you can deduce the knowledge through POE

Right on wanago2college.

There’s no reason to freak out about them- you will generally know the answer.

I was freaked out the first time I saw one of those questions (even scarier was the fact that it was in the ACT practice booklet they mail out), but eventually I decided if it showed up, I would with 99% certainty be able to answer it because it would be common knowledge. This is actually why they ended up becoming my favorite questions - they’re an easy question that could’ve been replaced with a more time consuming one.

Don’t worry about these. They probably won’t show up, and if they do, you should be pretty happy about it.

I’ve only taken one real test so far where background knowledge was necessary (I don’t remember the question…it stemmed from chemistry). Had I not known the answer, I would have been upset- but really, shouldn’t these be the type of questions that the ACT actually uses? It’s supposed to assess what we’ve learned in high school, but the only thing it actually manages to do is test how well we can work under harsh time constraints (in the science section, I mean).

See my thread for more information on what kinds of problems requiring background knowledge showed up on the ACT and when: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/act-preparation/958128-act-science-compilation-background-knowledge.html.

once there was a question with choices like weathering and erosion and mountain building and some other geography thing. like wth we don’t even take that in hs!!
