How often does it snow in Seattle?

I have noticed on yahoo weather that it snowed these past few days? I always thought Seattle has rather mild winter?

We probably get about 0 to 6 days of snow every year. We probably average about 2 days with at least 1-2" of snow each year.

Because of the numerous hills and bridges in Seattle, the lack of adequate snow equipment, and the relative lack of snow-driving skills of Seattle drivers, those 1-2" are more disruptive than similar amounts would be in flatter areas that are better able to remove the snow.

^ that basically means when it snows in WA, most people freak out and forget how to drive.

^LOL that’s it in a nutshell. same thing in vancouver bc. still don’t understand how we got the winter olympics…not complaining though

in seattle, it hasn’t snowed the last few days, everywhere else it did. seems like there’s a noteworthy snow storm every couple years or so.

Seattle does not get that bad at all compared to some mid-west and east coast states. When it does snow, we get about like 2-3 inches, maybe more if the weather goes nuts on us. The roads aren’t that bad at all but people take precautions at all times and some hilly sides of Seattle can get a little scary. But the snow will most likely wash away within a matter of days; it trickles A LOT in Seattle.

@ghuskies: nah, that’s just people from western WA.

Regarding snow being disruptive, there’s also the danger of ice forming for those few days, which leads to videos like this: [YouTube - Seattle Winter Storm - Cars and People sliding 11/22/10](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

But yeah, it barely snows in Seattle. If it does snow, there’s usually rain to get rid of it relatively quickly.

It really depends where exactly you are. The eastern suburbs in the hills get snoo much more and it stays longer. We just had 8 inches in Snoqualmie while downtown/udub had a trace. Big snow at Udub is once every 5 years or so.

Usually: when the weather report calls for snow, we’ll get ten minutes of a snow flurry and that’s it. Or no snow at all.

Probably 2 times a year snow sticks to the ground.

Cougar country knows how to take care of the snow… it’s just Husky country that doesn’t know how to drive in it or take care of the roads, but in this economy, Seattle isn’t going to invest in a lot of snow removal equipment that may get used once/year.

You can prepare and plan all you want, but you’ll still only be an expert swimmer who’s never got into the pool. The only way to get better at driving in the snow is by driving in the snow. And that doesn’t happen enough for people to be prepared.

The biggest problem for those people in the metro Seattle area is black ice. And that, folks, is scary. You don’t know the road is icy until…ZIP! And you can always count on overpasses and bridges to be icy.
