How old are you?

I posted this on MIT's page... (I know a lot of you read both, sorry!) :

This sounds like a dumb question, but, uh, my mother won't let me go to college next year (yeah, awesome, I know)... Because I'm only 17 and won't turn 18 until February. She doesn't want me to be the youngest (I am at my high school).

However, I've been told that a lot of people going to MIT are young.

So here's the poll? How old are you? I want to know even if you're going to be 18/19 so I can get a feel for percentages.

A lot of students here are exceptionally young. I would estimate that at least half of the 2009 Class was as young as or younger than you when they entered Caltech. There a number of people in my year that were only sixteen when they entered, and even one fifteen year old.

I also know a number of sophomores that are close to your present age.

hey...i can tell u that a lotta young guys go to college
I go to cornell (just thought i'll give my view) and i turned 16 this year...won't have a driver's license for the next 2 years...
so..yeah...many guys are like u

It's not that uncommon. A friend's sister was held back one year before she could go to Oxford because she was too young by their standards. She spent the one year helping their father in his missionary work.

thats because UK follows a 13 yrs education policy!!! its weird i know...
thou ive been accepted at Cambridge...but am denied entry for the next 2 at present i'm contemplatin Cornell and UChic
(i have no intention of wastin 2 yrs of my life)

You prolly shoulda changed the MIT at the bottom of your post to Caltech, though, mangopeachie :-P

Yep, you definitely won't be alone. I'm turning 17 in September... (and don't know yet if I got into Caltech, but thaattt's beside the point.)

This is never going to give you a feel for percentages, though :)

Woohoo, I'm 18 today!

What an awesome early present from Caltech :).

17 isn't that young ;)

Wow, I feel so old. I'm 18 haha.

It's not uncommon at all for someone to come at 17. One of my close friends started out at 17 and did fine. Another person in my house started as a sophomore at 16. She lived at home for two years (her grandmother lived close by), but otherwise was fine. (I think she had more difficulties from being a transfer than from being young.) The current BoC Chair was 17 when she started -- something I was incredibly surprised to realize later. I'd guess that about a fifth of students, maybe slightly less are 17 or younger.

You definitely won't be the youngest -- every class has a genius who's 16 or younger. If she's really worried, have her call up admissions and talk to them about it. They can give her an idea about how many people your age enroll, and they might be able to reassure her.

I'm 17...I turn 18 on Aug. 25, so I'll be start Caltech when I'm 18.

I'm 16, but I got rejected so it doesn't matter.

Close B-Day biomath2. I'll be 18 Aug. 12. So, I'll be 18 if I start Caltech (Gotta find some way off the waitlist :().

Will be 19 in fall.

Just turned 17.

I turn 18 in September.

Will be 18 in December
