Your son can enlist in the Army Reserves or Army National Guard if he is at least 17 years old (with parental permission). Your son is probably referring to the Split-Option Program. Enlisting under split-op would allow your son to go to basic training the summer after his junior year, and after that he would go to your local unit’s drill weekends once a month (and get paid for it!). After he graduates from high school, he can either choose to stay in the Reserves or National Guard, or either go Active Duty.

There is also the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP), which allows you to be in the reserves or guard while doing ROTC in college. My son knows several people that are in this program at NMMI. These cadets get tuition assistance and a monthly stipend.
