If I get accepted to Berkeley as a transfer student, I will almost be 26 years old when fall semester starts. I was wondering if I would be out of place in the dorms at that age. Sure I could live off campus, but I really like the idea of getting that “college experience” for at least a year. Give it to me straight guys, is that too old to live in the dorms?

probably. most people in the dorms are 18-19

The ‘dorm experience’ is primarily based on your social interactions with your fellow residents. All other benefits of res-hall housing, such as proximity to campus, can be obtained otherwise. Ask yourself this - do I have the same interests as 18-19 year olds? Will I be able to easily interact with them? Will I build connections with them? If not, no point in overpaying for living in a cramped little room.

What about the apartments on campus? Do they have more older/transfer students? One of the main reasons I want to live on campus is because of the convenience. The fact that I will be living with young kids in a cramped space is not so bothersome. I lived in the barracks in the Marine Corps for many years, so i’m fairly used to it. I would love to have my own room though, that would be ideal.

55 would be to old for sure :)

Wow, from the Marine Corps to Berkeley, seems like worlds apart.

But to answer your question, I think requesting something like Channing Bowditch or Wada would be best if you want that college experience, especially at your age. It seems like the only social advantage you have living in the other dorms would be that you would be the designated purchaser of alcohol.

I think it depends partly on how old you look. If you can “pass”.

Im sure you could “pass”. Most of my GSI’s could live in the dorms. However, the problem is that you might be far too mature for most of the people who live in the dorms.

A single in the dorms might be worth it. And if you stay in the dorms another year you can become an RA.

I really wouldn’t suggest living in the dorms unless you could get into Wada, which is mostly filled with transfer students. Most of the students in Wada will be around 20, but there are always a few older students as well, myself included (I’m 25).

I’m sort of up in the air whether it was a really a good idea to spend the year in the dorms. On the plus side, I’ve made friends and gotten a taste of the “dorm experience.” However, there is definitely a difference in maturity level that is not really quantifiable. You’ll probably find yourself having a difficult time relating to your fellow students unless you are good at adapting to different social situations. However, you might have an easier time depending on how good you are at getting along with people.

What are the chances of getting a single room? Are they pretty hard to come by?

For frosh and sophs, 1/1000 (according to an email housing sent me after I inquired; though, they did give me a single anyways).
For jr.s and sr.s, >1/1000

^^ I greatly envy you

26? Try the apartments, not the Units/Foothill-you’ll stand out I think.

fjee, I’m in the same boat…I’ll be 25 when I transfer, and Wada really appeals to me.

changusmc: Yea it’s kind of a weird spot to be in. Especially for me because I would qualify for family housing, it just depends on my domestic situation at the time, which is currently in limbo. I’m going to have to keep my options open and decide when the time comes.

If you’re talking about UC Village, that’s a GREAT place to raise kids.

International House is primarily grad student housing (older students) but as an older transfer student you might be comfortable there.

[Accommodations for the Academic Year](http://ihouse.berkeley.edu/l/room_info.html)

fijeeboi - If you have a ball & chain and some creepies running around, you’d prolly be better off in living in some family housing, granted your family moves with you.

changusmc: that’s the problem bro. There is a definite uncertainty about my future marital status. Currently married, but unfortunately that doesn’t always last. So i’m going to apply to family housing, on campus housing, look for off campus housing, and see what my situation is when I have to move in. I have to get into UCB first of course…haha. But considering that I received income verification paperwork from UCB, i’m feeling pretty confident about my chances.

dntw8up: Thanks for the link to the international house. Seems like an interesting option.
