I recently got accepted and I was wondering if they are a good school. I haven’t visited yet but I feel like it’s kind of a lower education school. My parents really like it because it’s only 20k in total and they are trying to sway me to go there but I’m not sure. I also would be going into their exercise science program and eventually into their physician assistant program. Thanks
Slippery Rock is mostly known because it’s got a funny name. There’s nothing wrong with the school, but I wouldn’t call it prestigious.
If you like the school and the program, and the price is affordable, then go for it.
BTW - my son was an exercise science major at one time and switched to a different major because he realized there weren’t many good jobs available for people with that degree. You should probably be pretty confident that you can get into the physician assistant program if you do pursue an exercise science degree.
About 1/2 dozen of my family members have attended slippery rock. They all love it. A good number of them were dance majors but for them it was the right choice and for their families the price is right. Each one left school with no loans. 2 were from PA and the other 4 from New England states.
I can’t speak to prestige but I do believe that school is what you make if it. One of my cousins had multiple internships in Pittsburgh while at slippery rock.
Talking about prestige in this forum is a slippery slope. I’ll show myself out.
It is a good school. We know of a Ph.D student at Michigan who went to undergrad there. I would not call it prestigious, reserve that for the top 25 or so.
Not prestigious. It’s fine, if you like it that’s wonderful, but no one’s gonna be amazed that you went to slippery rock u. Prestige is a weird thing to base a college decision off of.
What are your stats?
Slippery rock is not a prestigious school but if you have a 2.6-3.0 GPA and a critical+m+w Sat score in the 1350-1600 range it’s an appropriate school. Known as jocky, lots of athletes. Honors program easy to get into (3.0 and one AP should so the trick).
What other universities are you considering or have you applied to? What your EFC and your parents’budget?
I’m not sure what EFC means but my parents budget is about 24k. Also I have an 3.7 gpa and 1550 sat
I wouldn’t call it prestigious, but it’s a decent school.
EFC is your “estimated financial contribution”. Run the FAFSA estimator, since your parents budget may be different than your EFC.
EFC: Expected Family Contribution.
It’s ehh. I’d give it about 2.5 stars. It all depends on what you’re looking for, though.
Never heard of it.
But it sounds dangerous.
@drkasnight: did you get that GPA with some Honors or Ap courses, or are almost all your classes regular and elective? How many years of a foreign language have you taken? What’s the highest math class you’ll have completed (ie. Precalculus? Algebra2 Honors?) Are you retaking the SAT this January (if not, see if you can test as a standby: a higher score could mean merit money in PASSHE schools).
I’ve been In honors sciences my entrie high school career and I’ve taken Ap US and I’m currently in AP Gov and AP Bio. I’m also in calculus this year so I think it counts as an honors class. I took 3 years of language including honors Spanish. I do not plan on taking SAT again, for some reason no matter how much tutoring I get, I cannot raise my score(kind of depressing, I’ve taken 3, 2 with tutor) (1040 on 2 part super scored)
@drkasnight, Have you tried the ACT? Some students do better on it.
Try the ACT, you never know.
But you’re the textbook-case of a student who’d do well at test-optional colleges because you have an excellent GPA in rigorous courses, and that’s what matters most for college success.
So, with this in mind, apply TEST OPTIONAL to:
Dickinson, Ohio Wesleyan, Wooster, Beloit, Loyola-Maryland, St Michael’s, Drake.
The applications are relatively easy but should be completed quickly since they’re due by 2/1.
Ok thank you
Also St Lawrence.
All of these schools are WAY better than Slippery Rock.
