How prestigious is UMICH to employers??

Just want to see people opinions/knowledge about the topic

Most employers I know hire for skill, not for the prestige of where you went to school.

This question comes up a lot and I’ve decided the answer from now on should simply be “It’s prestigious enough.”

The prestige of Michigan is sufficient to draw thousands of recruiters to campus. After that it is up to the individual student to excel via his/her GPA and demeanor. Michigan can lever you into the game, but after that you are on your own. This is true at most schools. Most employers will not say “well, devoid of maturity,j leadership, and social skills, but he/she went to school X”. Just as students seek fit relative to school to attend, employers are looking for fit, for creativity, for initiative and for some basic skills in the discipline at issue (engineering, chemistry, bio…).

The above observations are for those students who want to enter the workforce with a B.A./B.S. only. It is also true that Michigan has been a feeder to elite graduate programs for years, so if your ambition is to not immediately enter the workforce but to continue your education, Michigan will get you there.

Work hard on the GPA. Do some research. Work at internships for “real-world experience”. Polish your team-working and social skills and Michigan will serve you quite well.

best employers hire for both, and weigh towards the latter as a prerequisite at the junior level.

My employer ( Chicago area) is obsessed with UMich. We have many alumni in high ranking positions. Graduating from there will markedly increase your chances of at least an initial interview and help you land an offer. That’s not usual here. And by the way I work at a law firm. And undergrad at U mich counts as much as what lawschool you went to in my employers eyes. So much for " only grad school matters"

thisguy2727, Michigan offers the best of all worlds:

For employers seeking technical competence (firms like NASA, Boeing, GE, Microsoft, Google, Cisco, Intel, Sun Microsystems, Dow Chemical etc…), Michigan is at the top of the food chain thanks to its top 10 College of Engineering. Heck, several of those companies were founded by Michigan alums!

For employers seeking talented students from elite universities (like Management Consulting firms and Investment Banks), Michigan (particularly Ross) is very highly recruited.

Generally speaking, in academe (if you choose to apply to graduate school someday), Michigan is one of the 15 most prestigious universities in the nation.

For employers seeking technical competence (firms like NASA, Boeing, GE, Microsoft, Google, Cisco, Intel, Sun Microsystems/Oracle, Dow Chemical etc…), Michigan is at the top of the food chain thanks to its top 10 College of Engineering. Heck, several of those companies were co-founded by Michigan alums!

For employers seeking talented students from elite universities (like Management Consulting firms and Investment Banks), Michigan is very highly recruited. Some of those industries, such as Investment Banking, recruit mostly at Ross, while others, like Consulting, will recruit across campus (LSA, CoE and Ross).

In Academe (if you choose to apply to graduate school someday), Michigan is one of the 15 most prestigious universities in the nation, and places students into top graduate schools accordingly.

So, to answer your question, how prestigious is Michigan? Where is counts, very!
