How prestigious is Virginia Tech on a national scale and on a state scale? How selective are they?

The correct answer is: Who cares?

What you do to build your resume while studying for the degree (research, internships, networking with professors, high-level coursework, etc.) is far more important than the name on the diploma.

VT is a fine school with well-regarded programs in a lot of fields and you’ll get a quality education there. Stop worrying about what anyone else thinks of your school choice. :)

If you mean “prestigious” as in people will be wowed when you mention it, resume readers will stop to take note, and the name of the school will be a conversation starter in social settings, then there are only about 20 schools in the country with that sort of cachet. VT is not one of those. If you mean “prestigious” as in being respected and generally recognized as an excellent university, then certainly VT is that.

VirginiaTech is not well known on the west coast. It’s a respectable university but I wouldn’t describe it as particularly “prestigious” or “renowned” on a national level.

I’m surprised you would ask this question because most universities outside the USNWR national top 50 are not well known on a national level. Most people’s knowledge of universities are only of the USNWR top 10 and their knowledge gets patchier from there. By 50, they’ve mostly only heard of their regional universities. -.-
