So my school emphasizes Naviance and makes rankings (reach, possible, likely) based on that (aka, how students compared to me have done in previous years)… Is this reliable? I’ve heard from many CC commenters on my posts who say that my “possibles/matches are actually reaches”, and my “likelies are actually matches”…
My main concern are the two schools I love (Dartmouth and Brown) seem to not be in my favor based on Naviance. I know it comes out tomorrow, but I just wanna mentally prepare myself (i.e. not get my hopes up).
For Dartmouth specifically, everyone in my range has gotten waitlisted. The people who got accepted are usually under my stats (same SAT but lower Gpa or vice versa), but less than a handful who have been accepted have stats significantly higher than mine both SAT and GPA wise (only 2 ppl)… I was wondering if based on stats, even if I wrote good essays, if I will get waitlisted (I have no hooks)
@yonceonhismouth thanks so much! Yes I understand ivies are crapshoots (or most schools with less than 15% acceptance rate for that matter)… I just really worked hard on my Dartmouth app specifically and can actually see myself there (“fit like a glove”)… the supplement was PERFECT for me because I related so much to Dr. Suess and other children’s references (Kermit the Frog was another supp), and I like Dartmouth curriculum/English courses as well!
I just feel such a strange connection to Dartmouth without having visited, and I kinda wish I Ed’d there (of course, if I get in, I will visit!)
The acceptance rate for Dartmouth is around 10.5% so you can’t just go by Naviance data. Naviance won’t tell you if a student has an alumni parent, was an athletic recruit, had a great essay or amazing recommendations that piqued the interest of the admission officer, had a particular talent the school wanted etc. As noted above the Ivy schools should be considered reaches for any unhooked applicant. Good luck.
Naviance can not predict acceptance to an ivy. The Ivies will decline more qualified applicants than they can admit. There just isn’t enough room for them to accept every qualified applicant. Hopefully your fit will have shown through in your essays but it is still a reach for even someone who is qualified and fits like a glove. Good luck!
@Dogcat73 Ivys are very hard to predict. If you look at my Naviance, it looks like you can get into Yale with a 26 ACT- but I know that it a hooked (athletic recruit) applicant. That’s what you don’t see… the hooks.
It is absolutely impossible to predict the outcome of applications to colleges such as Dartmouth and Brown which has a acceptance rates of around 10%. Your time would be much better spent looking for match and safety schools that appear affordable and that you would be happy to attend.
