In my application extracurricular activities are pretty weak outside of sports (50 hours of community service, a couple of clubs senior year, and a summer college program), but if the time commitment of sports is equal to other activities I would blow them away. I play two sports, each takes about 20 hours a week in-season and countless hours in the off season. How does this compare to say volunteering or a more academic endeavor?

Sports are generally well-regarded as an EC.

Sports are totally respected as a great EC; especially if you are very good at it that the top colleges will recruit you before everyone else even applies.
