Hey guys, I am currently a sophomore at UNC and am looking at off-campus housing with a couple of friends. We’re looking at a great little house in Carrboro on W Poplar Ave (if anyone’s familiar with street names), and it’s looking like a great place, but I’m kind of worried about the crime rate in the area. It seems pretty high, especially the robbery statistics, and I’ve had numerous people who live/lived tell me their homes have been broken into, sometimes while they’ve been there. I know that crime is an issue everywhere, but I thought I’d ask here to see how people feel in Carrboro–relatively safe?

I know safe is subjective, but I’m not looking for someone to tell me that Carrboro is kept within this little bubble…of course it isn’t. I just want to know that if I’m walking (not alone, of course) from the bus stop on Jones Ferry or W Poplar/Davie Rd that I’ll feel relatively safe.

I’d say Carrboro’s crime rate isn’t high relative to other places in the area.

I live right on the border of Chapel Hill/Carrboro. I feel safe walking to and from the bus stop, but I won’t say there’s a 0% chance of your house being broken into. :-

That said, I’ve lived in this house for a year and a half and really enjoyed the actual location. I love being right near Weaver St, and Carrboro really is a neat place. And the buses are great.

Carrboro had its first murder in I believe decades last year, and that was a domestic violence situation that didn’t involve any students. Carrboro is completely safe. There are plenty of cops and they don’t ever seem to have much to do.

Interesting to hear…I was in Chapel Hill back in 1986. It was heaven back then. I rode my bike for shopping at Harris Teeter all the time. May be time have changed…by that much?

You could totally ride your bike to Harris Teeter! I do that all the time. But if you have a crappy lock, you could count on them being stolen. That’s true on campus, though, too.

I’m not saying that I don’t feel safe walking around, etc. I genuinely do. It’s just I know when I leave for holidays that we should batten down the hatches.

Yes; There is a saying, Locks are for those who are not going to steal in the first place…Back in the old days, I used to stop by at fruit stands with tomato and melons on the road side near Chapel Hill. There was a bag for putting money and a cardboard posting on prices. You just weigh them out and put the money in the brown bag. That was the good-old days in Chapel Hill…
