How selective is the RHS Business School?

There aren’t very many stats on the selectiveness of the Business LEP major at UMD… I’m curious how difficult it is to get in, and what the admissions office looks for in the applicants.

White girl, in state
I scored 1400/2170 (1600/2400) on the SATs and a 31 on the ACT (32 w/o writing).
Cr: 720
M: 700
W: 750

I have taken a couple Chinese classes and I have decent ECs, including four years on a school sports team (plus several seasons on different leagues outside of school).

I’m planning on double-majoring in Chinese and perhaps either International Business or Supply Chain Management if I’m lucky enough to get in.

Great SAT scores…what’s your GPA?

Thank you! My GPA unweighted is 3.89, weighted is 4.25. 3 B’s-- two in math classes and one in Physics.

Ooo, another mistake in my original post~
1420/2170

Great unweighted GPA too! Mostly likely Honors Business.

Thank you, too!

Honors Business? I’d still be in the Smith school, right? The whole Honors college deal still kind of confuses me. I’m not sure I’d be up for Honors Business and a Chinese double major… that’d be very difficult. I love learning Chinese very much and no matter what happens with my college admissions, I’ll find some way to learn it.

However, for one of my app essays, I wrote about how much I love the German language (self-expression essay). I want to continue with both… I am a little worried that they’ll be wondering what’s going on with me, wanting to major in Chinese but writing about German. :-O

I think I psyched myself out too much.

Sounds like living in the Language House is in your future (sophomore year + on)!

I did check out the language house when I visited a few months ago! It semed right up my alley. Quiet and language oriented. I only spoke with the Chinese apartment (they were the ones doing the open house) but they all seemed very kind and intelligent. I wanted to move in right away…
I think I’d like to spend a year in China, whether it’s two split semesters or a year straight. I was thinking maybe sophomore year would be a good time to check it out, so I could practice my language skills early on.
But maybe I’d get there and dislike China. That would really stink.

Yes, the business school is Smith. The Honors college is a learning and living program.

Being able to speak multiple languages is a plus, should enhance your application.

I seriously doubt that you will dislike China, unless you can’t stand the pollution. UMD offered a three week study abroad course in China during this past summer to the incoming freshmen. If they offer again, it would be a great opportunity to experience the country before you commit a semester or a year.

Perhaps astromom can tell you more about the Honors program and the Language House.

I am pretty sure you will be admitted.

Thanks for clearing that up, Cv1214. There are so many colleges and programs within the university.

I heard about that! I’d love to try it, although I think last years was about architecture or engineering? Maybe it was a different program…

Thank you, momof3greatgirls
