how selective should i go??

i’m an international student, born and raised in africa. lived in germany for 2 years when i was 13 and 14.i learnt german and am now bilingual. moved to america in 9th grade
M-720
CR-740
W-700
UW GPA 3.5ish (bad, i know, but i’ve taken a lot of APs-most rigourous classes-at a challenging, private school)
good recommendations, sports, clubs, etc

What is the most selective school I could get into???
i’m a little confused!! any comments would be much appreciated :)

schools the caliber of Emory, Vanderbilt, Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Tufts, Middlebury, Bowdoin, Davidson, Grinnell, Wesleyan, Vassar

Schools like that would be reaches.

William & Mary looks beyond the numbers to the whole applicant.

You were born in Africa, but are you African by race? A mix of race-based affirmative action and genuine rarity of African applicants could make it worth your time to apply to some of the Ivies

Do you have a green card?

Yes, I have a green card and i’m a permanent resident here. And yes, I am white even though I was born in South Africa, ‘white African American’ lol
So far my list looks like this:
Duke
Cornell
Emory
Vanderbilt

Hamilton
Colgate
Lafayette
Lehigh
Bucknell

Charleston
Clemson

I don’t know how much my GPA is going to affect me, I have definitely not been a straight A student in HS. Will the colleges consider me international, even though I am living in America? Also, I have read that admissions is more competitive if you’re coming from out-of-the-country, would this affect me?
I have read about colleges (I think Vanderbilt in particular) who are trying to attract more international students to bring their numbers of international students. Would other colleges be looking to do this as well and could I play it up and use it to my advantage?
THANK YOU!!! Really good to have some others opinions :)

My understanding is that by having a green card you are pooled with the domestic students. This is good because non green card internationals have a harder time getting financial aid. How it would help you otherwise in the process, I can’t say but I would think it would help.

You should be looking at the type of colleges that college help listed in post 2. However because of low percentage rate of admissions, none of them is a sure thing.

GPA wise, I don’t know a lot. Since you do have a selection of AP classes and a rigorous course load, many high schools and colleges would weight them therefore increasing the GPA. Don’t try to judge off of the kids who post in the chances forums. They tend to be the most extreme high achievers. You are a solid student.

Clemson and Charleston are easy safeties for you, if that’s the kind of school you’re looking for. I would also suggest U South Carolina. They have the honors college, which you’ll probably get into, which gives you priority registration, much better housing, the opportunity to take small honors GenEd classes instead of the large lecture-style ones, and the opportunity to graduate with an honors degree. You could probably get some good scholarships too. I had slightly lower SAT’s and a higher GPA and I got into the honors college and was given a decent scholarship offer. Clemson and CofC both have honors programs too that you may want to look at.

Look into the schools suggested by collegehelp and swish for reaches. I think Emory and Vanderbilt would be really good. If you don’t mind the smaller LAC environment, you could also try Furman as maybe a high match. They have excellent academics and grad school placement, as well as great opportunities for undergraduate research.

Just out of curiosity, what part of SC are you from? I’m from Columbia and I go to Presbyterian, but I’m working on transfer apps.

sorry, double post

I’m not sure whether 3.5 is my GPA weighted or not. I am kind of concerned, I have been looking back at my transcripts today and I have gotten a couple of Ds. My school is very challenging a almost nobody gets staight As(not one person my senior class of about 100 has all As)
I don’t know if it’s worth it to try for schools like Duke, I’m sure almost all of their applicants have never gotten even a B in their lives. How much importance do the admissions on GPA?
THank you all!!
