I took regular chem last year. Mid way through the year, I got mad at myself. So, I took chemistry over the summer. Now I am in AP Chem.

Where and how should I go about explaining my decision? Personal letter, common app essay, e-mail…

You don’t really need to explain it unless you want to. Or ask your guidance counselor to address it for you- you were worried about the challenge, loved chemistry and took on an even bigger challenge (AP chemistry) which is recognized to be one of the more difficult AP courses. Doing well in AP Chem will be a plus, but you get credit for taking on a bigger challenge regardless.

I don’t think this merits explanation at all. My daughter had a scheduling conflict and could not take the honors section. She never explained it.
