I’m currently a freshman at Capital University in Columbus Ohio pursuing a degree in computer science. I very much love Capital, but I want a double major or second degree in Russian language. The problem is Capital doesn’t offer a degree in Russian. Ohio State University offers both, but I would really like to continue computer science at Capital. I’m wondering if it’s possible to take russian classes at OSU during the summer and continue going to capital for cs. I read somewhere that credits used towards a degree can’t be transferred though. Should I wait until I have a degree in CS and then transfer to OSU for Russian? Any other options? People tell me Russian is a waste of time, but I really enjoy it and would really love to have a degree in Russian.
Why do you want a full major or second degree in Russian? What would you do with that degree/major? If what you want is to become fluent in the language, you probably don’t need to finish a specific degree, just language courses.
You need to find out from the people at Capital whether or not the Russian courses you want to take would apply toward anything (foreign language requirement? liberal arts gen ed credit?) for your CU degree. Even if they won’t, there is no reason to not take them as a non-degree student at OSU.
I don’t understand what you mean by “I read somewhere that credits used towards a degree can’t be transferred though.” Each college and university decides for itself which previous coursework transfers and as what. There is no reason to assume that courses applied to one undergrad degree at one institution cannot be applied toward a different undergrad degree if you transfer.
If your reason for pursuing a second degree in Russian language is not for career/job related reasons, but for passion/interests related… you can always minor in Russian which means you can take only a few amount of classes relating to Russian language. Computer Science is very time consuming so your Russian classes may interfere with it.
