How should I put a publication with a long author list on my resume?

I recently had a paper published in a well-known, peer-reviewed journal. I’m about the 10th author out of 20, but it’s a good enough journal that I think I should still put it on my resume. However, if I include the entire list, it takes up too much room! Is there any way to include it in a shorter form? Is it strange to include a publication if I wasn’t the first or second author?

Thank you!

You should list the lead author, then yourself, and include “et. al.” after that.

Will that make it look like I’m the second author?

Does anyone else have suggestions about this?

Hi redhippo, I’m a college professor. List the lead author, then et al., then yourself. Otherwise, as you noted, you’ll look like the second author. Here’s an example in APA format (the journal title should be in italics – I’m not sure how to do that in this entry):

2014 “Complex cognition and judgment errors in adolescents,” co-authored with Petrovsky et al., Cognitive Processing 20 (Spring): 99-115.

Thank you so much!

Is there a way to write it so that it’s closer in format to:

Petrovsky, et al., Sara Smith, “Complex cognition and judgment errors in adolescents,” Cognitive Processing 20 (Spring): 99-115.

I’ve never seen a co-authored article formatted that way on a resume. But you could do something like this:

“Complex cognition and judgment errors in adolescents.” Co-authored with Petrovsky et al. in Cognitive Precessing 20 (Spring 2014): 99-115.

Or, since you are on a list of 10 authors, you could simply list them all on the resume:

A. Petrovsky, M. Levine, B. Chan, F. Liu, S. Shepherd, A. Pratt, R. Shah, M. Massieh, K. Clark, S. Smith, “Complex cognition and judgment errors in adolescents,” in Cognitive Processing 20 (Spring 2014): 99-115.

If you simply Google the names of prominent researchers in your field, you’ll likely find their cvs posted online on college and university websites. This will give you an idea of the format commonly used in your academic area.
